The lack of water resources and serious soil salinization in the low plains of Hebei Province restrict the development of local agriculture. The Developing of dry farming and water-saving agriculture, planting water-saving and salt-tolerant forage millet and other crops are important measures to adjust the agricultural planting structure in Hebei low plain area, improve agricultural water use efficiency, and reduce groundwater over-exploitation.Based on the characteristics of different typical areas in Hebei Plain, this study selected Hengshui and Cangzhou for field experiment, studied the water consumption regularity and mechanism of feed millet under dry farming mode, and analyzed the growth and development, water consumption and yield of different varieties of forage millet. The difference in water use efficiency, selection of stable growth traits, high yield, high water use efficiency, suitable for the cultivation of millet varieties in the test area, the main conclusions are as follows:(1)The water consumption of forage millet decreased with the decrease of the lower limit of soil moisture content.K3201 consumed the least amount of water under each water treatment. In terms of yield, the 1000-grain weight and single-panicle grain weight of T1 were the largest in all the 4 varieties of forage millet, and the difference between T4 treatment and T4 treatment was very significant, indicating that T4 treatment produced relatively serious water stress on the growth of forage millet and inhibited the growth of forage millet.India 0906 and K3201 had the highest water use efficiency in T1 treatment, while forage No.4 and C264 had the highest water use efficiency in T3 treatment.(2)Forage No.4 and C264 had the fastest growth rate in the early stage of jointing stage, while India 0906 and K3201 entered the period of rapid growth of plant height from jointing stage to heading stage.Forage No.4 has the highest water consumption during the whole growth period, which is 325.10 mm,and K3201 consumes the least amount of water, reaching 298.83 mm.India 0906 has the highest yield among the tested varieties,India 0906 has the highest dry matter yield; From the perspective of crop water production efficiency,India 0906 has the highest WUE,and each water can produce 12.79 kg of fresh grain for feeding.(3)The feed millet plant in Cangzhou area was short and slow to grow. The water consumption of Forage No.4 in the whole growth period is relatively high. The application of soil conditioners can reduce soil salinity and conductivity, improve crop growth environment, and increase yield, and the effect time is consistent with the key period of crop growth.Comparing with the other three varieties,C264 has the highest yield and the best performance.India 0906 is more affected by salt. When applying soil conditioner,India 0906 performed better than C264.
