The study aimed to assess the nutritional value of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal and the possibility of replacing dietary alfalfa meal via two experiments,with growing rabbits as a model.Experiment 1:Nutritive value of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal in growing rabbitsThis test was designed to evaluate the nutritional value of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal on growing rabbits by the substitution method.Twenty-four French IRA rabbits,42 day in age and 1.11±0.10 kg body weight,were randomly assigned to two groups corresponding to 2 dietary treatments:basal diet and test diet.The test diet contained 85%basal diet and 15%Daheishan meal.Animals were housed individually in single wire metabolism cages and were subjected to 11-d in vivo digestion trail.The results showed that:?1?Proximate analysis showed that the DM,GE,CP,CF,NDF,ADF,ADL,NFE,EE,Ash,Ca and TP content of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal were 88.46%,16.94MJ·kg-1,13.46%,29.58%,62.57%,42.05%,7.01%,31.20%,1.02%,13.19%,1.21%and0.20%,respectively.The essential amino acid,Arg,His,Ile,Leu,Lys,Met,Phe,Thr and Val,were 0.47%,0.15%,0.37%,0.74%,0.41%,0.14%,0.46%,0.45%and 0.49%,respectively.And the nonessential amino acid,Ala,Asp,Glu,Gly,Pro,Ser and Tyr contents were 0.57%,1.04%,1.13%,0.55%,0.45%,0.45%and 0.30%,respectively.?2?The total tract apparent digestibilities of DM,GE,CP,CF,NDF,ADF,ADL,EE,Ash,Ca,TP and the digestible energy?DE?of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal were31.67%,30.02%,09%,4.55%,10.26%,0.80%,29.21%,54.68%,38.17%,58.84%,6.25%,5.69 MJ·kg-1 DM,respectively.The digestibilities of the essential amino acid Arg,His,Ile,Leu,Lys,Met,Phe,Thr and Val were 89.98%,87.16%,82.54%,84.31%,83.77%,72.40%,83.63%,75.81%and 83.84%,respectively.And the digestibilities of the nonessential amino acid Ala,Asp,Glu,Gly,Pro,Ser and Tyr were 82.81%,84.20%,88.81%,79.91%,79.51%,83.04%and 84.06%,respectively.Experiment 2:Effect of inclusion of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal in the diet on growing rabbitsThe objectives of this study was to investigate that effects of dietary replacement of alfalfa meal with Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal on growth performance,health status,nutrient apparent digestibility,slaughter performance,serum biochemistry and gut health of growing rabbits.150 weaned New Zealand white rabbits,aged 35d with similar weight,were assigned to two tests as follows:100 weaned New Zealand white rabbits with similar weight?1.00±0.09 kg?were allocated in a completely randomized design with five treatments?10 replicates per treatment,2 per repeat?,and all were fed five types diets?control group?C?,S25,S50,S75 and S100,the same below?,respectively,and feeding trials were carried 28d.For digestibility trial,50 animals weighing 1.12±0.05 kg were allotted to five groups,all animals were housed individually in single cage,for 11d.The results were as follows:?1?Between the groups,there were no significant differences in production performance in each period of each group and health status in the whole period?P>0.05?.?2?The total tract apparent digestibility of DM,CP,EE,Ash,NDF,Ca and TP in each group differed significantly?P<0.05 or P<0.01?.All apparent nutrient digestibility?except EE and CF in group S100?in the all test groups were higher than that in control group,especially group S50.?3?Between the groups,there was no significant difference in other serum biochemistry?P>0.05?,except for the serum urea nitrogen on the 15th day?P<0.05?.?4?Between the groups,slaughter performance between groups at the end of the test and all the coefficient of the organs on the 15th day and 19th day had no significant difference?P>0.05?.?5?Between the groups,there have no significant difference in other digestive enzymes in the intestinal segments of the animals,the activity of sucrase in the mucosa samples from duodenum of the rabbits showed significantly different between groups?P<0.05?,which were showed the highest in group S50.And there were no significant differences in intestinal morphology and crypt depth of caecal between the groups?P>0.05?.?6?Between the groups,there were no significant difference in caecum fermentation function?P>0.05?.And according to the results of 16S rRNA sequencing,the diversity and abundance of the caecal microorganisms showed no significant differenceat the phylum and genus level between group C and S100?P>0.05?.?7?No significant difference was found in the activities of SOD and CAT and the levels of sIgA and MUC2 in the duodenal,jejunal and ileal mucosa between groups?P>0.05?,although the activities of SOD and CAT for the four treatments?particularly for S50?showed higher than group C.In summary,the nutrients and content of Coix lacryma-jobi cv.Daheishan meal are abundant.In particular,the fiber composition is reasonable and the protein content is high.It has high nutritional value and can completely replace alfalfa meal in the compound feed of rabbits.However,considering comprehensive indicators,the recommended replacement ratio is 50%.
