Low light stress is a major problem that influences turfgrass qulity in big cities.Therefore the shade tolerant performance(stem length,height,biomass and chlorophyll a/b content)of eight elite warm-season turfgrass(Tifway419,Tifwarf,Tifgrand,Tifsport,Salam,Sealsle2000,Manila grass,and Centipedegrass)grown in Shanghai was evaluated under three levels of light conditions(full snlight 0% shade,one layer shading net 60% shade,and two layers shading net 90% shade).The results show that:(i)light intensity effects turfgrass quality significantly,and the low light(shading net treatment)reduces turfgrass growth and increases death.(ii)There many variety of shade tolerant among different turfgrass species.The shade tolerant of the tested tufrgrass under one layer shading net treatment as follow: Manila grass,Sealsle2000,Salam,Centipedegrass,Tifgrand,Tifsport,Tifwarf,and Tifway419.While there are different results under two layers shading net treatment,and shade tolerant ranks from high to low as follow: Sealsle2000,Salam,Centipedegrass,Manila grass,Tifgrand,Tifsport,Tifwarf,and Tifway419.(iii)The shade tolerant of Manila grass reduces as the duration time under severely low light stress(90% shade).
