Xylo-oligosaccharide(XOS),a kind of prebiotics, can effectively promote the proliferation of intestinal bacteria, improve growth performance and immunity of livestock and poultry. However, the efficacy of XOS in fattening pigs is divergent. In order to further explore the effect of dietary XOS supplementation in fattening pigs, the impacts of dietary XOS supplementation on the performance, carcass traits and meat quality were determined. In Exp,balanced for sex and body weight,72 DLY pigs with 21 kg BW were randomly divided into 4 dietary groups with 6 pens per treatment and 3 pigs per pen.The pigs in control group were fed corn-soybean meal based diet without XOS.The treatment group contained corn-soybean meal based diet added with 0.02%,0.03% and 0.04% XOS,respectively. The experiment duration included 3 stages: 25-50 kg,50-75 kg and 75-110 kg.The pre-feeding period was 7d,the experimental period was 103 d,and the final 4d of each stage was used for digestion test. After the end of the experiment, one pig in each replication with average body weight was slaughtered and the digesta in each gut segment were collected. The carcass character and meat quality were measured and evaluated. The results were showed as follows:(1)There were no significant effects on ADFI,ADG and FCR of fattening pigs(P>0.05).The apparent digestibility of dry matter, gross energy in 0.03% XOS group were significantly higher than control group during 50-75 kg and 75-110 kg stage(P<0.05).Serum glucose level in pigs fed XOS was significantly higher than pigs in control group during 25-50kg(P<0.05).(2)Dietary supplementation with 0.03% XOS significantly increased the content of propionic acid in the cecum and colon(P<0.05),and the content of butyric acid in the colon(P<0.05).A tendency in increased content of total volatile fatty acids in the cecum was observed(P=0.08).Dietary supplementation with XOS tended to increase the content of Lactobacillus in the cecum of pigs(P=0.10).(3)Dietary supplementation with 0.03% and 0.04% XOS significantly increased carcass length in pigs(P<0.05),and dietary supplementation with XOS tended to increase the p H45 min of the longissimus dorsi and the a* value of the pork color(P=0.10).In conclusion, dietary XOS supplementation had no significant effect on growth performance of fattening pigs, but could significantly increase the apparent digestibility of dry matter and gross energy during 50-75 kg and 75-110 kg stage.Dietary supplementation with 0.03% XOS significantly increased the concentrations of propionic and butyrate acid in the cecum and colon.Dietary supplementation with 0.03% XOS significantly increased carcass length in pigs, and improved the quality of meat to some extent.Under the experimental conditions, the optimal dosage of XOS supplemented in the diets of fattening pigs was recommended as 0.03%.
