| As the New Residential Area in The City Plan of Nanking,Yihe Road District is designed as a low-density,high greenery rural residential area based on Howard’s "Garden City" concept. In the following 100 years, the morphology of Yihe Road District was temporarily stabilized due to factors such as social changes, planning positioning, and changes in the main body of residence. The garden houses in the district are constantly influenced by different value judgments which externalize in the morphology of courtyards. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the process of cultural assimilation of garden house, which is a western residential type, after entering China by analyzing and comparing the morphology and historical traces in Yihe Road District. In the second chapter, the development process of the Yihe Road District is divided into four periods by the historical phasing method, which show the effects of social changes and urban texture: The structure of the district has not changed in essence, while the courtyard units have undergone a complex process of change. In the third chapter, based on the existing 265 courtyards, the author organized relevant planning, historical data, drawings and maps, selected 64 courtyards as in-depth research objects based on the representativeness and feasibility of the research, and established a database to follow up the comparative analysis of morphology and typology,as well as the supplementary explanation of sociology. The fourth chapter extracts the morphological sections of the garden houses of the Republic of China and the morphological sections of the garden houses after the founding of the People’s Republic of China by comparative morphology and typology analysis based on the mapping drawings and related maps of Nanjing. On the one hand,it compares the similarities and internal laws among the cases of the courtyard, while on the other hand,it summarizes the process of change and the social rules behind the morphology at different times. After the comparative morphological analysis and verification of historical data, the evolution of the concept definition, design methods and rules of the garden house is extracted, which show the assimilation process of this western urban design concept. The "garden city" was originally a product of the middle-class de-urbanization reform, after entering modern China,it was once owned by colonists and dignitaries, which was a representative of social class. After 1949,the orientation of garden house turned to the unit courtyard of equalitarianism, and then a new garden house area was developed. The change in concept has transformed the form of garden houses from detached houses to collective residences, and further derived new-style residentialareas. The rules behind this operation, such as regulations, natural criterion, and cosmology, are of great significance to understand Chinese Habitat preferences and the Sinicization of modernism. The whole thesis contains about 40000 words,66 pictures and charts. |
