A Study On Garden Prose And Private Garden Culture In Tang Dynasty

The tang dynasty was the heyday of garden development,and the most important characteristic was the rise of private garden.And produced the literati garden designed and built by the literati.These gardens are now gone,and we can only trace them and their culture from the written word.There are many forms of garden literature in tang dynasty,so at the beginning of the research,the author has sorted out the definition and classification of garden literature.After comparing the research status of garden poetry and garden prose,we focus on the garden prose of tang dynasty.Since the tang dynasty was a prosperous period for the development of private gardens,this paper studies the prose related to private gardens in the tang dynasty and the private garden culture in the tang dynasty.There are two main types of garden prose in tang dynasty: one is garden notes,the other is garden preface.These two styles account for the largest number of texts and are more distinctive,so they are the focus of this study.Based on the professional background of landscape architecture in undergraduate and ancient Chinese literature in master’s degree,the author selected tang dynasty garden prose as the main research object and discussed the private garden culture in tang dynasty.Garden prose contains a lot of content,from the perspective of history,literature,aesthetics can see different content.Private garden culture is also all-embracing.Social life,mentality of literati and aesthetic pursuit all embody private garden culture.Therefore,these two objects cannot be separated for research.Garden prose and garden culture are integrated.This paper focuses on these two objects and is divided into four parts.The first chapter sorts out and classifies garden prose of the tang dynasty,especially those related to private gardens.At the same time,it analyzes the rise of private garden culture and demonstrates the relationship between garden prose and the development of private garden culture.In the second chapter,the author respectively discusses the literati’s garden activities recorded in the garden records and the garden preface,especially the political significance of the literati’s social activities and feasts.On the basis of the first two chapters,the third chapter focuses on the garden construction activities recorded in garden prose.On the basis of a certain understanding of the relationship between garden prose and garden culture,combined with the connotation of friendship,political intention and so on in the garden activities,then look at the construction activities of the garden,and have a deeper understanding of the design concept of the owner of the garden.The last chapter studies and analyzes the mentality and value orientation of the literati in the tang dynasty,from which we can see the significance of the garden to the literati.The cultural deposits of private gardens in the tang dynasty are hidden in the garden prose,and the literati’s concept of "advance and retreat",the inheritance and circulation of gardens,and the transformation from private to open space are the real contents of private garden culture.The author also hopes to find a new perspective of tang dynasty garden literature and tang dynasty garden research through this study.
