“Pop-up” is a popular term used to designate intentionally temporary occupation of built environment. It umbrellas a diverse range of temporary places and events. For example, pop up shops with trendy appearance but limited business time;open street as a plaza dedicated to public outdoor activities while closed to vehicles;mini parks assembled on the site of underused parking spaces along the street and so forth.Pop up urbanism is transformative in multiple aspects. It allows pioneering trail and innovation considering the limited time. Also, places produced by pop up render flexibility and resilience. Moreover, actors contributing to placemaking are diversified. As a ubiquitous phenomenon in urban life, pop up is being discussed by western scholars from various perspectives.Frontier researches concern creative temporary uses as a response to property of high vacancy, tactical urbanism with short-term actions for long-term change,do-it-yourself urbanism by bottom-up placemaking, etc. However, the current researches on pop up in western academia are scattered and partly focused, lacking integration and systematic analysis. On the other hand,in domestic urban design field, theory of pop up city is still blank.Based on the perspective of urban space, the study builds a framework for urban pop up.Three typologies are proposed-NODE-type,which niches into urban voids;STREETtype, which creates interactive linear space;NETWORK-type,which incubates new network system for community with decentralized interventions of public spaces.Under this framework, the paper reviews literature involved with pop up city theories and combines case studies to explore pop-up's operation method, spatial traits and impact mechanism. It provides reference and inspiration for further spatial design and social management in a fluid urban context.
