A Study On Critical Determinants Of Chinese Construction Project Performance In Cambodia

The construction industry plays a significant role in economic development through infrastructure development and leads to economic growth.The construction industry in Cambodia is growing very fast throughout the whole country,especially in the capital city.At the same time,most of the projects have been suffering from many problems and complex issues.Hence,the objective of this paper is to identify the critical determinants of Chinese construction project performance in Cambodia that determined the critical determinants based on perceptions of project owners,consultants,and contractors.Relative important index RII and Pearson correlation were adopted as the methodologies in this research.The survey collected 122 questionnaires form respondents comprised of 65 Cambodian and 57 Chinese,therein 43 respondents are project owners,23 respondents are consultants and 56 respondents are contractors.The reliability test revealed that all the data are reliable with Cronbach's Alpha 0.877.The results by relative important index indicated that escalation of materials prices and cash flow of project are the most important factors affecting to construction project performance in Cambodia and another top factors following by leadership skills for a project manager,material and equipment cost,learning from best practice and experience of others,workgroup,conformance to specification,unavailability of competent staff and quality of equipment and raw materials.In term of amount ten group factors,project owners,consultants,and contractors defined that innovation and leading group factor are the most important for owners and contractors,and quality group factor is the most important for consultants.Moreover,the correlation test amount ten group factors are good related to each other.The author recommends owners and contractors should be more interested in materials management because of materials represent the main expense in a construction project.Escalation of materials price will be hugely affected to the owner's financial and contractor's profits if the performing of materials management is poor.Consultants should be more interested in conformance to project specifications to overcome disputes,time,and cost performance problems.
