Nowadays, the global architecture community is advocating the return of regionalization and nationalization, and Chinese contemporary architecture is no exception.Although "Chinese-style" architecture has a long history, there are still endless phenomena of retro-archaism and imitation. The author finds that I.M.Pei abandoned the large roof and decorative symbols for the buildings he designed, and put forward the importance of the theory of "virtual(courtyard)space" in traditional Chinese architecture, which shows various possibilities for the development of the new era in his creation. This paper chooses several works of I.M.Pei,and takes the two representative architectural virtual spaces, the atrium and the courtyard,as the research objects.Firstly,it restores the role and shape of this element in his architecture from the perspective of architectural design, and analyses its constituent elements and evolution process;secondly,it analyses the "Court" space in different buildings of I.M.Pei by considering the regional differences in combination with history and culture;what's more,it further analyses and expounds the artistic conception of "Court" space by comparing with the works of other countries and local architects.I.M.Pei's atrium and courtyard design methods,as well as its particularities and differences, and evaluate its gains and losses. Finally,it evaluates the value of Pei's architecture in the construction of Chinese local architecture, and makes a new attempt and answer to the creation of Chinese contemporary architecture. After comparing and analyzing the characteristics of different research objects, the author finds that I.M.Pei has established a set of complete design logic with "court" as the core, and can flexibly change in different contexts under the modern combination of nature and history. What is insufficient is that the homogeneity of design elements and techniques of "court" space is more serious. So I.M.Pei's modern "virtual space" theory based on Chinese tradition has limitations, but its enlightenment to contemporary Chinese architectural creation can not be ignored.
