China's automobile production and sales have been ranked first in the world for ten consecutive years as it remains one of the pillar industries supporting the nation's economy.The huge market expansion during this period of continuous economic and social development has brought upon a series of issues regarding the environment as well as the depletion of natural resources.Due to these issues,the current trend in automobile production leans towards green manufacturing and ecological designs.This paper begins with a summary of the development status of China's automobile industry while expanding on the importance and necessity of green development in automobile production from a resource,energy and environmental perspective.The summary is followed by a brief introduction on the research theory life cycle assessment methods and related research dynamics.By taking the car roof as the research object,the ecological evaluation results of the traditional rigid roof and SMC material cover are compared and analyzed from the perspective of the whole life cycle.The main steps are as follows:(1)phased construction of the ecological life evaluation model of mineral material(M)consumption,fossil energy(F)consumption and waste discharge(W)in the whole life cycle of the automobile roof,namely the four-stage “MFW” evaluation model for the comparative analysis of the two life cycle stages of the car cover and the overall resource consumption and environmental impact;(2)use LCA soft Gabi to build a calculation model,the impact on the life cycle of the two caps and the resource environment of each stage are quantified(3)characterize,normalize and weigh the software calculation results,and compare the resource and environmental impacts of the two materials solutions of the car roof with visual data.The results show that in the raw material acquisition stage,the SMC material top cover is less expensive than the traditional steel top cover ore resource,but the energy consumption and emissions are more;while the SMC material roof resource environment impact is inferior to the traditional steel roof cover in the manufacturing stage.In the use and recycling stage,the environmental impact of the SMC material roof cover resources is better than the traditional steel roof cover.Over the course of the whole life cycle,the SMC material roof cover has a better resource and environmental impact.Finally,the conclusions drawn from the ecological evaluation and comparative analysis are used to put forth a suggestion to improve the eco-design and green manufacturing standards of the automotive industry,providing a positive outlook in the ecological design of automotive products.
