Feng Shui is a discipline of China since ancient time.It is about the use of external environment, spatial planning, landscape design and interior design.Feng Shui contains rich knowledge and is the gem of wisdom of ancient ancestors. The fundamental purpose of Feng Shui is to create a pleasant living environment.By observing and manipulating nature in a logically way,the ideal living mode of so-called “wonderland” or “harmonizing individuals with environment” is finally realized.Feng Shui has a long history, and it is widely circulated in both the folk and royal family.During thousands of years,Feng Shui presents a variety of genres and relatively completed systems.Since the Tang Dynasty,Fengshui has gradually formed two schools, they are the Form School and the Compass School. The Form School pays attention to the analysis of geographical environment and focuses on landscape observation. It mainly discusses the site condition and spatial layout through the five aspects of “natural mountain, manmade mountain, site selection, waterscape and orientation”.The Compass School pays attention to the orientation of the building, the relationship between the building and the star, and focuses on the orientation and the atmosphere. There are four main methods,“Ba Zhai”?“Qian Kun Guo Bao”?“San He” and “Xuan Kong”,could be used to evaluate the layout of a building.Although the two schools are different, they share the same purpose which is to explore the relationship among master plan, building orientation, landscape design and human activities based on the cognization of nature.People use and transform the environment to serve human kind and to create a more sustainable and enjoyable living condition. This paper selects six royal gardens from Qing Dynasty as investigation subjects. These six royal gardens are well preserved and many of the historical records of them could be traced down. The dissertation will analyze the conception of the Form School from the site selection of six royal gardens, terrain form, waterscape design and building orientation etc. Moreover, the concept is also verified by traditional Feng Shui treatment in this dissertation.Based on site visiting, instrument measurement and browsing historical materials, whether the royal gardens used Feng Shui for their site selection and landscape design is studied. Also,a conclusion of the difference and similarities of the use of Feng Shui thought in royal gardens will be made by comparative study. The study of royal garden's Feng Shui culture will lay a solid foundation of further study of Chinse classical landscape gardening. The study of Feng Shui takes the responsibility to inherit and carry forward the Chinses classical landscape design.Additionally,it could provide reference and new thoughts for the researches of Feng Shui in the field of classical landscape design.
