Lilong housing district in Shanghai reflects the irreplaceable local characteristics of old Shanghai. With the rapid development of society,Shanghai Lilong housing has undergone dramatic changes both spatially and socially. The inherent architectural form and spatial pattern cannot adapt to these changes, posing a huge threat to the development of the city.Especially in recent years, the townscape of Lilong housing has been severely damaged because of the rapid expansion of urban economy. It is quite difficult to transform Lilong housing due to factors such as good geographical location, outdated building facilities, and large population. As the adverse consequences of the traditional urban renewal and transformation methods gradually appear,a "micro-regeneration" method which is a low-threshold and easily fixed method that can be implemented routinely, continuously appears.Aiminlong is one of the few remaining small block type Shikumen Lilong, which is listed as the type of rescue protection. Its "micro-renewal" is imperative and imminent. In terms of theoretical research, this paper deeply studies the history of Shanghai Lilong, reviews and reflects on the renewal and transformation of Shanghai Lilong over the years, and analyzes the current situation of Shanghai Lilong and the "demolition" and "protection" threats that it faces. This paper identifies the classification and exterior characteristics of Lilong, deeply understands the complex features of Lilong as an ordinary unit of the city, and recognizes the "diversified" value system of Lilong housing. It is concluded that Lilong housing is a spatial and social compound system that is still in use and micro-regeneration design of it should be people-oriented rather than material-oriented.The post-occupancy evaluation(POE)of the micro-regeneration design is essential. It is conducive to improving the steps and procedures of the micro-regeneration and understanding the sensitive position that needs attention in the design implementation process. It is benificial to truly understand the residents' thoughts and needs. It is helpful to promote the continuous and gradual progress of micro-regeneration and lead to a "community governance + public participation" mechanism. In terms of practice, this paper studies several micro-regeneration projects, including Guizhouxili,Xichengli,Derenli micro-regeneration,that best fit the micro-regeneration design of Aiminlong, and summarizes their design methods. This paper also summarizes three design ideas and six processing methods of micro-regeneration,and proposes the goals of micro-regeneration design, which are the enhancement of functionality, identifiability, culture, interest and publicity.Prior to the design of the micro-regeneration of Aiminlong, the characteristics of Aiminlong's public space were investigated in detail, and opinions from residents, the government and other stakeholders were consulted. This paper hierarchically classifies the difficulties that Aiminlong 's micro-regeneration faces and screens out the problems that architectural design can solve. The micro-regeneration design of Aiminlong is mainly carried out from three perspectives, including modernization of facilities and equipment based on maintaining the overall atmosphere of the building to enhance the functionality, repairing and displaying the historical genes of the building's facade to promote the identifiability and culture, sorting out public area on the basis of traditional conservation aiming to create more public space for residents to strengthen the interest and publicity.Adhering to the concept of "tectonic",the selection and design of materials and structures are based on user needs and existing technologies. This paper conducted a post-occupancy evaluation on the micro-regeneration design of Aimilong after two-year use. This paper carries out qualitative evaluation by means of walk-in observation, questionnaire survey and semi-structured in-depth interview, and quantitatively analyzes the data by statistical methods. Then, the micro-regeneration design improvement directions of Aiminlong outdoor public space is summarized.First, the planning of public activity space should be adjusted according to the location of activities.Secondly, indoor public space should be created.Thirdly, subtle adjustment of public facilities should meet the needs of residents.Finally,elderly-oriented reconstruction is suggested. On the basis of facts and analysis, this paper draws the following conclusions on the design optimization of micro-regeneration.In the micro-regeneration design of Lilong Street in Shanghai, the idea of traditional architectural thoughts-based innovation is recommended.Secondly, the micro-regeneration design need to comply with the principle of "more demolition and less construction.Thirdly, the micro-regeneration design should increase the multi-function of facilities and equipments, which is conducive to maintaining the original space texture and leaving space for public activities. Finally, holding the tectonic idea in the selection of materials and design construction can combine the history and modern very well.On the basis of facts and analysis, this paper draws the following conclusions.Proportion and scale are the key considerations of micro-regeneration to ancient building.Selecting and designing materials and structures based on the idea of “tectonic” can make history and modernity combine very well." micro-regeneration design" and "post-use evaluation" are conducive to make the Lilong exist sustainably by preventing Lilong reconstruction from emphasizing too much on material rather than residents living condition.
