China is experiencing major growth in rail transit development in recent years.In order to evaluate the quality of street pedestrian space and to explore the prominent characteristics and organizational factors of pedestrian space in central metro station area,this study evaluates and summarizes the quality optimization ideas of current street pedestrian space in stations area in China.By using a mixed-method approach involving both qualitative and quantitative methods,this study identifies and ranks key attributes which can improve the spatial quality of pedestrian space in central metro station area.This overall study was conducted in three main stages.In the construction stage of evaluation index system,48 experts were investigated through Delphi Method to form a quality evaluation index system of the pedestrian space in central metro station area.In the application stage of data collection,data of subjective indicators were collected by field investigation,map marking,questionnaire surveys and interviews.A total of 180 questionnaires of Semantic Differences Method were carried out for survey.In the stage of data analysis,descriptive statistical analysis was used to process the data and form the final conclusion.This study is helpful to figure out the determinants of urban street space quality of rail stations to improve the space user's satisfaction and to improve the efficiency of public space use in the stations area.The main contents of this paper include the five main parts which are highlighted as below:The first step is to put forward research questions and hypotheses.Based on the background analysis of the development of metro station area,this paper summarizes the significance of pedestrian space construction for regional development in metro station area.Then it clarifies the research questions,research purposes and significance,research objects,research methods and research framework of the paper.The second step is to form a literature review.Firstly,the representative theories,tools and methods are summarized through the status quo research of street pedestrian space in central metro station area.Secondly,comparative study of theories of metro station space,street space and street design guidelines of major cities at home and abroad was conducted to summarize the characteristics and the influence factors of street pedestrian space quality in central metro station area.The third is to form a spatial evaluation idea combining subjective evaluation with objective evaluation through methodological research.The third step is to construct the evaluation index system.This part mainly focuses on the quality index system of street pedestrian space in central metro station area.By using Delphi method and mathematical statistics,the preliminary results of the evaluation index are sampled and analyzed.An evaluation index system of street pedestrian space quality in central metro station area is developed.The fourth step is to conduct empirical research.This part takes Tianfu Sanjie Station of Chengdu Metro Line 1 as an example and applies the quality evaluation index system of street pedestrian space in central metro station area.By using SD Method,field research,map marking and interviews for data collecting and data analysis,this chapter seeks to evaluate the levels of space users' satisfaction in order to explore the characteristics and problems of street pedestrian space.The last step is to reach research conclusions and optimization suggestions.This part summarizes the significant research findings and puts forward the quality optimization strategy.The study find some positive effects,such as the delimitation of bicycle lanes,small-scale block space organization,mixed organization of street-facing functions,combination of threedimensional space and commercial services and so on.At the same time,it is proposed to strengthen the scale of commercial service function and the dynamic atmosphere by expanding the dynamic interface vertically and increasing the three-dimensional space.On the other hand,there are also some aspects needed to be further improved: optimizing of pedestrian space function,strengthening bicycle system and pedestrian facilities,strengthening the construction of small-scale blocks,enhancing the pedestrian space comfort and so on.These research findings provide an important reference and inspiration for creating high quality public spaces in the centre metro station area.The empirical study contributes to universal research in other public space in metro station area by identifying key spatial factors and will provide useful implications for researchers and planners.
