The motorcycle wheel,as the key part of motorcycle,is the most prone to failure in the impact test.A valuable model for the assessment of the impact characteristics of a motorcycle wheel has not been proposed until now.The diagonal tyre and valve hole need to be considered in this model.In order to reduce R&D cycle,it is necessary to carry out some works about the impact characteristics of a motorcycle wheel.The main contents of this thesis are shown as follows:(1)A FE model is proposed for simulating single mass impact resistance test of motorcycle wheel.This model is value for the assessment of the impact characteristics of a motorcycle wheel.It contains a diagonal tyre model and a valve model.The tyre model without taking pre-tightening force between tyre and rim into account.The pretightening force between valve and valve hole is also ignored.The good comparison between experiment and simulation indicates that the FE model without taking pretightening force into account is valid.The influences of these pre-tightening forces are analyzed by a FE model with taking the pre-tightening forces into consideration.(2)Various single mass impact simulations are carried out in this thesis.The results of these simulations are analyzed by a single-degree-of-freedom system.A key issue in the analysis is the time of impact.The transient maximum impact load is crucial to the impact characteristics of wheel in the simulation.Therefore,an analytical method for calculating the transient maximum impact load in the process of impact is proposed.A static model is proposed based on the results of the impact simulations by wheel-tyre assembly FE dynamic model.The static model is suitable for some comparative studies of the same motorcycle wheel.(3)A FE model is proposed for simulating double mass impact resistance test of motorcycle wheel.The results of the simulation are analyzed by a double degree-offreedom system.(4)The mass of the striker in the pendulum impact resistance test is same as that of the single mass impact resistance test in the ISO 8644:2006 standard.However,the result of pendulum impact simulation is significantly lower than single mass impact simulation.Hence 1.5 times the mass of the single striker is given to that of the pendulum striker.The weakest part of the rim has not been exactly specified in the standard,hence a solution to the problem is proposed.
