Since the reform and opening up,the economic take-off has greatly promoted the development of China’s modern cities. The influx of people into the cities has brought great challenges to the limited land resources. In order to solve the increasingly serious urban housing problems,high-rise residential products have begun to emerge. After decades of urbanization development,high-rise communities have become the mainstream products of urban housing. At the same time, the concept of urban complex and block-type housing has made the scale of land use in high-rise communities gradually shrink.Judging from the achievements of high-rise residential construction in the past, such communities often pay too much attention to the residential space inside the house and neglect the design of the environment outside the community, which leads to the low utilization rate of external activity space and unsatisfied demand of residents’ outdoor activities. This lack of vitality and function is in contrast to the original intention of construction, which is the main starting point of this paper.Under the guidance of theoretical research on environmental behavior, this dissertation discusses the use problem of external public activities space in high-rise communities from the perspective of space vatility, and proposes strategies.Through the evaluation of space vitality and the field research of five high-rise communities in Chongqing, the most important spatial factors affecting space vitality are analyzed, and the design strategies of external public activity space is proposed. This dissertation is divided into three parts for research. The first part is the basic research, the first chapter and the second chapter, including the introduction, the interpretation of environmental behavior theory and the analysis of research questions.Firstly, the research background and research purpose of this paper are introduced. Then the related research contents and theories of environmental behavior theory are explained, and the relationship between space and behavior is analyzed from this perspective. Then based on the particularity and existing problems of high-rise communities and the characteristics analysis of high-rise communities, the problem of activity space vitality is analyzed. The reasons for the lack of vitality of external public activities in high-rise communities are summarized. The second part is the vitality evaluation program design and vitality evaluation analysis, namely Chapters 3 and 4.First of all, through the reference of related literature, the adjustment of high-rise communities and the on-site investigation of the case, this dissertation establishes an evaluation index system for the spatial vitality of external public activities in high-rise communities from two aspects of vitality representation and vitality component. Then,on the basis of the vitality evaluation index, the five high-rise communities in Chongqing are investigated on the spot, and the methods of observation and questionnaire were used to evaluate them. The qualitative analysis method was used to analyze the correlation of statistical data. Finally, the nine spatial components that affect the vitality of the external public activities of high-rise communities are obtained, for which further analysis are conducted in five investigated cases. The third part is the proposal of the design strategy and the conclusion, namely Chapters 5 and 6.Firstly,through the nine highly activated spatial elements obtained above, and after integrating and summarizing them, the five design strategies for the spatial vitality of external public activity space in high-rise communities are finally proposed. Then an empirical study is conducted on the optimal design of the 10 th block of Luneng Xingcheng, which is the least energetic community. Finally, the sixth chapter summarizes the full text, explaining main conclusions, limitations and innovations of this research.
