Huaigu Poetry:Literary Interpretation Of Guji In Ancient China

The theoretical research of contemporary Chinese heritage protection,overshadowed by western authorized heritage discourse,lacks local cultural genes,resulting in the local heritage discourse system yet to be established full-fledged.The essay studies Chinese ancient literary interpretation of the historical sites centered around the core concept “historical sites” and through interpreting literature and analyzing cases.Under the influence of the traditional consciousness of “Haogu” of Chinese people,there had appeared a new type of poetry whose poetic inspiration came from ancient traces,a type called “Huaigu Poetry”.As poems interpreting the value of Guji,these Huaigu Poetry have been conducive to improving the historical consciousness of the public and promoting the spreading and popularization of Guji.This thesis focus on the concept of “Guji”,analysis those Huaigu Poetry themed on ancient traces like the Ancient Capital of Jinling(Nanjing),Jiayuguan Pass,the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.Ancient Chinese emphasized the social value and educating functions of Guji,and took poetic interpretation as their distinctive way to inherit and spread the value of Guji,thus making Guji?s value become increasingly enriched during the long historical course.It laid the foundation for constructing a systematic framework for the protection and cognition of monuments.In the meantime,by tracing the birth and development of the artistic form of garden “Tuyong”(a combination of poems and paintings),the thesis also analyzes the influence of Huaigu(nostalgic)consciousness on the Chinese classic gardens.Huaigu Poetry prove that the cults of monument have been one origin of landscaped gardens and has promoted the development of those gardens.
