The waiting space occupies a large proportion in the public space of the outpatient building. It is the bridge between the clinic room and the traffic space. It is the core area to maintain the order of the outpatient building. It is also the area where the accompanying members and patients stay for the longest time and the most interactive behavior occurs. In addition, the proportion of accompanying members in the number of children waiting for medical treatment is relatively large, and it shows a typical "binding" mode between accompanying members and children in China;Children are more sensitive to hospital environment and less tolerant than adults;Because of the huge population in our country, the hospitals are overcrowded, and the performance of children’s hospitals is more obvious.and the baby boom formed by the implementation of the “Two-Children Policy” will also lead to the growth of demand for medical treatment; It has become a medical trend in the 21 st century to take into account the psychological and behavioral factors of patients; With the popularization of intelligent system, waiting space will be liberated to a great extent, and it will also be designed with flexibility and possibilities. Therefore, how to optimize the children’s waiting space remains to be explored.Literature survey found that there is a lack of research on parent-child waiting behavior, the relationship between waiting space and behavior, necessary support of behavior data, quantitative spatial analysis methods and research methods are more traditional. At the macro level, there is insufficient understanding of children’s waiting behavior and lack of relevant norms and guidelines. It mainly depends on the Code for design of polyclinic buildings, and lack of clear requirements.Current situation investigation found that there are many problems in children’s waiting space of China, such as single function, imperfect service facilities, monotonous layout, insufficient spatial independence, lack of children’s activity areas and space planning for parent-child waiting. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to use the study of parent-child waiting behavior as an research point to explore the children’s waiting space to meet the needs of the times and use. This paper takes the children’s waiting space as the object, takes the children aged 0-14 and their accompanying members as the subject to study the waiting space based on parent-child waiting behavior, and tries a new research method with actual cases,as well as summarizes its advantages and disadvantages. The main contents of the study include the following parts:(1)Summarizing the background, literature and cases related to this study;(2)We visited the children’s waiting space in Beijing,Dalian,Shandong Province and Hebei Province, summarized the spatial pattern and current situation, and selected representative cases for investigation. The traditional on-site behavior observation was used to investigate the waiting space of 3F and 4F in a children’s hospital of Beijing. The method of "Fixed-pointmonitoring image + MATLAB programming technology" was used to collect and process information for the paediatric waiting space of a general hospital in Shandong Province;(3)In order to explore the relationship between behavior and spatial environment,as well as influencing factors of seat preference,we summarized and analyzed the basic attributes of users, the content and characteristics of parent-child waiting behavior, the use of waiting space,as well as viewshed analysis of spatial structure and facility elements of waiting space;(4)Based on the research results, suggestions for children’s waiting space design are put forward from three aspects: space, facility layout, special needs and preferences of parent-child waiting behavior. It is expected to provide new methods and ideas for future research, and provide corresponding reference for the design of children’s waiting space in future hospitals.
