The Poetic Of Material: Research On Materiality In The Works Of RCR Arquitectes

Concentrating on the local topography,the interaction with nature and viewers’ on-site experience,the works of RCR Arquitectes display the vitality of Modernism with the support of contemporary technology.Combing the theoretical research and case-study approach,I firstly summarize the understanding and applications of material by architects in history,introduces the practice background of RCR Arquitectes,so as to confirm the major framework of discussion.In Chapter 3,I try to demonstrate the design goal,process and outcomes of three selected projects,to analyze the uniqueness,reasons and/or limitations of each project regarding to material exploration,and to explain the connections between materiality and space,and structure by means of remodeling and diagrams.In Chapter 4,I summarize the common characters and principles of materiality in these projects,and try to reveal the originality and context in concept development,by comparing them with other projects designed by RCR Arquitectes.The materiality in RCR Arquitectes’ works,makes us rethink the contemporary meaning of Modernism: as long as we architects concerned to the basic needs of people,coordinated the relationship between architecture and nature,responded to the real life state,the Modernism could belong to the age.I hope that the projects and thought of RCR Arquitectes could inspire the future practice.
