The Expression Of Materiality In Modern Architecture

From the perspective of ontology, this article chooses the presence of materiality for study, and natural stone, which is throughout the entire history of architecture, for specific analysis. Through the detailed interpretation of a large number of related cases, the article tries to find out the reason that architects express the materiality in the design, restores the technology, construction methods and the associated nodes and detail design of the material in the process of architecture design and at last, explores the possibility of the presence of materiality in contemporary times.The article is composed of three main parts. The first part is the structural property of natural stone. Expression of structural property of materials is based on the material used as structural components. Stone bears the load in the single structural system or the mixed structural system with other materials. The second part is the surface property of natural stone. It mainly refers to the specific tactile and visual features of material, such as texture, color, transparency, etc. It is the direct cognition of material through the sense organ. Processing and construction are important factors that will affect the surface properties. The operation, control and even ellipsis to processing and construction will? affect the performance of surface texture or transparency at different levels. The third part is supplement and expand of materiality through other factors. Architecture must locate on a specific site, and do business with the local environmental factors. Climate, geography, culture, use, time and other factors can give the material specific significance. All of them are necessary complement to materiality.Through the analysis and discussion of materiality, the article attempts to emphasize the important position of material, structure and construction in architecture as the thinking and addition to the ontology of architecture. At the same time,the article also wants to discuss the specific practice with the help of natural stone. In addition, the thinking of materiality will help us rethink the courses that pursuit non-ontological elements too much and ignore the problem of material and construction in China.
