The Spirituality In The Living Space

Luis Barragan is considered as one of the most important architects of the 20 th century.As the winner of the 2nd Pritzker Prize,his works convey the sense of serenity and intimate feeling,bringing people into the realm of spirit,immersing visitors in brilliant and mysterious.His architecture is closely related to his personal experience such as traveling,thinking and reading.Barragan never stop observing and thinking in his own practice,and constantly inspired by various culture like his childhood memories,Mexican traditions,Indian cultural heritage,Mediterranean traditional culture and modernist architectural theory.Combined them with his own design philosophy,and form the unique design style by shaping space in a poetic way.At the same time,as a devout Catholic,Barragan regards the residence space as a form of religious space in the family,the design is filled with a quiet atmosphere.The blurred boundary between living space and spiritual space make Barragan's work more fascinating.This paper focus on three core spaces which are living room,bedroom and roof garden.The author started from Barragan's creative idea and representative works,trying to summarize the method of shaping and characteristics of the spiritual space in his works.Exploring the design method of how Barragan integrates spirituality into living space.The thesis has three parts,consists of six chapters.The first part(Chapter 1 and Chapter 2)expounds the background,purpose and significance of the research.It also talks about the related concept definitions,the scope and content of the research,the methods of research.The author analyzed many examples that are well-known for their spiritual space from the view of an architect,and derive the basic characteristics of spiritual space in five aspects: spatial position,spatial volume,spatial orientation,spatial interface and spatial elements.The second part(Chapter 3,Chapter 4,Chapter 5)is the core chapter of the thesis.It systematically analyzes and studies the living room,bedroom and roof garden,and summarizes the spatial spirit manifestations in the works.The third part is the conclusion.The author summarized the design method and characteristics of creating spirituality in living space and finally draw a conclusion.
