The increasing urban heat island effect UHI has led to the deterioration of the thermal environment in the settlements. The comfortable, healthy and livable environment has become a common demand and has received extensive attention. As the basic unit of the city, the residential area is one of the main indicators of happiness, attractiveness and livability.Unlike adequate indoor thermal comfort studies, there are gaps in research on the correlation between outdoor thermal comfort and space use:(1)The related research lacks the screening of thermal index, and the thermal index PMV suitable for indoor thermal environment is extremely limited in the application of outdoor thermal comfort research.(2)Existing research focuses on microclimate differences and thermal comfort models under urban morphological indicators, and lacks information on user tolerance and acceptability.(3)The differences in space usage and behavioral activity choices are ignored, and thermal environment optimization strategies are limited to greening configurations and building material adjustments.Based on this, this study takes the public space of typical residential areas in Wuhan as the research scope, and uses the microclimate data obtained by simultaneous measurement and questionnaire survey, and the user's thermal comfort vote as the data source.Researched the following:(1)Identifying public space behavioral activities and thermal preferences in residential areas.(2)Discuss the correlation between space usage and thermal index PET.(3)Establish thermal perception and thermal comfort prediction models for different types of activities, and analyze the mechanism of action behavior differences on thermal comfort range.(4)Thermal environment optimization strategies based on thermal adaptation are proposed. The study found that:(1)In the voting that affects the quality of outdoor space, thermal comfort is the primary factor affecting outdoor activities. There is a parabolic relationship between space utilization rate and PET,and the coefficient of determination of spontaneous activity is between 0.5 and 0.7,which is higher than social activity is between 0.2 and 0.5.In addition, expectation and experiencing behavioral habits can affect the tolerance of members and thus influence the usage rate.(2)There are differences in neutral PET corresponding to different activities.Spontaneous activity is more sensitive to thermal index PET than social activity, but social activity is more tolerant. The thermal comfort PET range of statically activity is between 18.0-33.6 °C,while the light intensity activity is 17.3-32.8 °C,and thermal comfort PET range of the medium intensity activity is 16.3-31.0 °C.Compared to the thermal comfort range of cool season, residents have a wider range of thermal comfort between 20.9-34.1°C in summer.(3)According to activity intensity, spatial characteristics and thermal adaptation factors, public space can be divided into four types: non-shadow space for static/light intensity activities,non-shadow space for medium intensity activities, shadow space for static/light activities and medium intensity activity of the shadow space, this study insists that different types of behavioral activities should be differentiated improvement strategies.
