At present, the scope of protection for historical buildings and cultural heritage extends from the protection of the noumenon itself to the overall protection of the surrounding environment;the protection of cultural relics and buildings develops from protection of the single building to the overall protection of historical building communities and the surroundings of their influence. As an important cultural relic, the restoration, protection, activation and utilization of Buddhist temple architecture has been concerned by all walks of life. Many cases show that the existing Buddhist temple architecture is facing many problems, such as the destruction of cultural relics value, the contradictions between the construction facilities and the style layout of the original buildings, the surrounding physical environment and the humanistic and historical environment exist. These problems are not conducive to the protection and development of Buddhist temple architecture. In view of this, the paper takes the Buddhist temples in Yangzhou as examples, and discusses the development process, composition mode and influencing factors of Buddhist temple architecture and space(1)By investigating 153 Buddhist temples and their spaces that have been announced in Yangzhou,a large number of first-hand information have been obtained through literature review, field visits, surveying and mapping.Through analysis of literature and on-site textual research, the evolution process of Buddhist temple building space in Yangzhou has been concluded:aggregate space centered on pagoda;multi-courtyard space centered on palace;axisymmetric progressive space.(2)According to the distribution status of Buddhist temples, the main factors affecting the architecture and space composition of Buddhist temples in Yangzhou are analyzed from the two aspects of site selection and layout. The space of Buddhist temples in Yangzhou is influenced by both Buddhist culture and social multiculturalism.Their location also have three features:Occupy hills;Close to water and Scattered in the city.In the layout,it has the characteristics of distinct internal and external, orderly architectural combination, rich and diverse forms and so on.(3)By sorting out and summing up 9 representative temples, the architecture and space of Buddhist temples in Yangzhou are analyzed from three angles which are architectural form, characteristics and space organization.Buddhist Temples in Yangzhou are in a spatial structure model based on gate(Tianwang hall),Buddhist palace,Tripitaka building(pavilion),Buddhist pagoda, and most of them adopt the large wooden frame technology which is popular in Yangzhou.Applying the theoretical research results of the paper to guide the protection and utilization of Yangzhou Buddhist temples, the design of Da Ming Temple' space has been successfully finished. The research results in this paper can provide a reference for further research on the protection and activation of Buddhist temple architecture.
