Space Feature Study For Buddhist Temple In Shanghai Area

The Buddhist temple takes the properties of public and society from ancient times. The temple garden is the one of the three branches of Chinese traditional gardens, which has important position in the development of human civilization. After Reform and Open, the outstanding cultural resources and social influence of Buddhist temple have been developed, because of the protection policy for religion. The construction of urban temples has got a new level. The study of space feature of the Buddhist temple in Shanghai area is significant to construct the space of Buddhist temple, which carries forward the good tradition and meets the demands of modern society as well, by means of planning and designing. Furthermore, the study is significant to promote the orderly development of religion in Shanghai area.The Jade Buddha Temple, Longhua Temple, Jing-an Temple, Zhen Ru Temple, and Bao Shan Temple, which have great social influence, is studied here. The artistic character and limitation of the space of Buddhist temple in Shanghai area are summarized by the analysis on the space feature from style of base, architecture space, garden space, boundary, etc., based on statistics of literature materials and mapping survey of the base.①The traditional axis and symmetry layout are inherited in main Buddha space in Shanghai urban Buddhist temples. It forms the outline, which is higher in the north and lower in the south, based on the outline of buildings.②The Buddhist temples with different historical characteristics, such as Tang, Song, Ming, Qing Dynasties, and Colonial period exist in the same city. The feature of construction of Buddhist temple is according with the feature of Shanghai city, which is inclusiveness and pluralism.③The consistence of the constructions in the Buddhist temples is higher and layers of the construction are more and more because of the contradiction of limitation of land and the increasing of function and object served.④The Buddhist temples in Shanghai area are combined with the urban public greenbelt, urban commercial space and public utilities to resolve the question of limitation of land and rarity of landscape space.It is showed that the development of modern Buddhist temple and urban city help each other forward by means of research on spot and the study of correlative theory are combined together is the innovation in the thesis. The feature and significance of the Buddhist temples in Shanghai area are concluded for the first time. It is also demonstrated by designing and planning in practice. It is intended to attach importance to Chinese Buddhist temple, the precious religious and cultural resource. Make it developed and constructed rationally. It is intend to build the Buddhist temple space, which is according with the feature of city in Shanghai, embodies the culture of religion, meet the demands of function in modern society, in order to improve the development of urban religion orderly.
