Livability and walkability are becoming one of the most important topics for many cities around the world,due to the automobile-oriented urban development hurt the social,economic and environmental values of cities.This thesis aims to investigate the concept of 'walkability' in urban space and to identify the measures of 'walkability.'Then the study analyzes the relationship between physical features of the built environment and level of walkability on the streets,as well as,tries to explore the design indicators that directly affect the walking volume of urban space.Hence,to examines urban design qualities,Baku city was selected as a case study.The analysis on Baku is carried out through five measures of the walkability by using ratings from the expert panel and personal investigation.These qualities are imageability,enclosure,human scale,transparency,and complexity.Based on the findings of the investigation,this thesis gives recommendations which are practical and which can be implemented on the design of the case study area,as well as on the public spaces that are similar to Baku or other cities.
