Study On Modern Villas Around Taihu Lake In Wuxi

Wuxi,with the unique natural condition and the prosperous development of garden culture since ancient times,is one of the cradles of Jiangnan Civilization.Especially in the modern times,Wuxi had tremendous development in national industry and commerce,and became the center of it at an explosive rate.With a broader vision and pioneering spirit,a number of prominent modern national industrialists in Wuxi cleared weeds in the Wuxi Taihu Lake,and created villas which initially influenced by western landscape and firstly opened to the public as private gardens in Wuxi,reflecting the obvious local feature and times spirit.Based on the social background,this paper firstly summarizes the construction background,construction and general characteristics of modern gardens in Wuxi.Secondly,the paper hackles the development of the modern villas around Taihu Lake in Wuxi systematically,which is divided into four periods:the latent period(1840-1911),the development period(1912-1930),the forming period(1931-1936)and the war period(1937-1949),and then analyzes and summarizes the social environment,influencing factors and development situation of each period.Thirdly,according to the historical documents,field research and articles of the hosts’ posterity,this paper summarizes the distribution of the modern villas around Taihu Lake in Wuxi,and then selects typical examples in each distribution area to study from the angle of construction background,building layout,landscape evolution,constitution art and gardening activities.Fourthly,the paper summarizes the gardening art of the villas,and the gardening activities in them.Finally,this paper summarizes the general characteristics and the value of the modern villas around Taihu Lake in Wuxi.
