The Ming Great Wall is not only a witness to the development of the Chinese nation, but also it carries a heavy information about culture, history and science. Moreover, the Ming Great Wall has unique scene of frontier style and it has great aesthetic research value. However, along the Ming Great Wall in Jinbei area, human beings have destroyed forest resources for their livings, which has led to serious land desertification and soil erosion in this region. It is not only harmful to the protection of the Ming Great Wall system and its surrounding heritage resources, but also it poses severe threat to the balance of ecological environment. The prosperity that the Great Wall once brought has ceased to exist. The construction of scenic forests is an important project to improve the ecological environment of the cultural heritage corridor of the Ming Great Wall in Jinbei area. The forest community can form a protective barrier for the independent heritage resources along the Great Wall, effectively alleviating the local land desertification and soil erosion and inheriting the regional vegetation landscape.Features can beautify the landscape environment and coordinate local economic development. The balance of natural ecology and cultural landscape will be implemented after the construction of scenic forests along the Ming Great Wall. However, traditional theories and modes of construction of landscape afforestation are limited to a single unilateral factor, such as visual effect or biological sensitivity, ignoring the multiple effects in terms of heritage conservation, ecological restoration, beauty enhancement and economic revitalization. Therefore, based on the data platform of geographic information system and the forestry information system, this study explored the strategies and methods for the construction of scenic forests in the cultural heritage corridor of the Ming Great Wall in northern Shanxi, which is supported by the theories of ecological afforestation, soil and water conservation, cultural relics protection and tourism management, and specialized in the special physical and geographical conditions. This study rationally coordinated the four goals including ecology, culture, landscape and economy. With the support of GIS technology, this study explored the methods of controlling and defining the scenic forest range of the Jinbei Ming Great Wall Cultural Heritage Corridor and the details of landscape forest planning and design.Arc GIS technology was employed to evaluate the heritage resources value, forest land suitability analysis, landscape visual sensitivity analysis. The selection of the scenic forest construction area and the division of general and key area are decided by weighted consideration. The construction combines traditional afforestation, landscape garden plant planning and designing methods in spatial planning and plant landscaping. The construction considers the conditions of forest growth in northern Shanxi and makes full use of natural conditions. It delineates vegetation landscape, tree species selection, community construction and four types of site-based fine-class planning. At last, this study creates a construction approach for landscape forest along the Cultural Heritage Corridor of Ming Great Wall in the northern Shanxi, which conforms to ecological laws and landscape aesthetics and explores a multi-balanced and near-natural regional landscape forest construction strategy.
