In recent years,China’s urbanization development is too biased towards urban expansion and vehicle-oriented urban construction. The trend of mobility of residents travel makes the proportion of vehicles’ trips increasing, which brings huge traffic pressure to the city, and also seriously squeezes the space for children’s school behavior.Space for school commuting is an important place for school-age children to contact society and nature. The emergence of social problems such as traffic congestion, squeezing of pedestrian space, air pollution and so on makes it difficult to guarantee children’s safety on the way to school. Therefore, how to improve the environment of school commuting and protect children’s space interest has become an urgent problem to be solved for the sustainable development of cities. This paper reviews the literature of children-friendly cities and built environment at home and abroad. On the basis of existing conventional factors such as individual and household factors and travel factors, this paper incorporates the built environmental factors into the index system of influencing factors for the mode of school commuting,in order to construct the impact model of built environment on children’s school behavior under different spatial types, including the built environment around the school, the built environment around the walking way to school and the built environment around the community.Three typical community elementary schools in Suzhou are selected to conduct an empirical study on the interactions between built environment and children’s school behavior. The individual and household factors and children’s travel factors in typical elementary schools are obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The data of built environment in different spatial ranges are quantitatively measured to obtain spatial factors of land use, road traffic and environmental design in spatial scope.Relevant analysis are used to study the interactions between the built environment around the school and children’s school behavior.Regression analysis are used to study the factors of the built environment around the way to school and the community affecting children’s school behavior.By comparing the results of data analysis, this paper explores the differences among the environmental factors influencing the choice of the mode of school commuting and the commuting time of children’s school behavior under different spatial types. Finally, according to the results of the model analysis, the strategy of optimizing the environment of school commuting is put forward based on the needs and interests of children. With the construction of the friendly spatial network for school commuting as the starting point,we should establish a sound control mechanism for the environment of school commuting for children and a decision-making mechanism for children’s participation,to promote children’s healthy school commuting, enhance children’s well-being,and promote the construction of children-friendly cities.
