The built environment consists of three parts: land use, urban design and transportation system. As the quality of life improves and lifestyles change, land use as the carrier of urban design and transportation system has gradually become difficult to meet the increasing transportation needs of residents.Exploring the intrinsic link between built environment and transportation is essential to build a good urban built environment. The objective built environment elements and the subjective perceived features of the built environment have been confirmed to influence individual travel behavior, but there is a lack of exploration of the effect of the combined effect of subjective and objective built environment features on travel behavior.Based on this, this study analyzes the mechanism of built environment influence on travel behavior from coupling the external objective environment and internal subjective perception dimensions of individual travel behavior decision. This paper analyzes the relationship between the built environment and travel, and constructs an analytical framework of the relationship among the subjective, objective built environment and individual travel mode choice based on the micro-individual perspective.Learning from the subjective perception evaluation methods of built environment at home and abroad,a questionnaire was designed to collect the four types of subjective perception elements and socio-economic attribute data of residents on the communities’ built environment, while web crawler technology and Arc GIS software are used to obtain objective built environment data within a 1000-meter radius buffer zone of the target communities,in order to comprehensively and objectively reflect the built environment characteristics of the target communities. On this basis, further empirical studies were conducted.Firstly,we quantified the built environment perception indexes by establishing the MIMIC model, and the results showed that the objective built environment indexes were important factors influencing the subjective perception of built environment elements;secondly,we established a hybrid choice model including both subjective and objective built environment elements to analyze the influence mechanism of subjective and objective built environment elements on the travel mode choice behavior under different travel purposes of residents, the results verified that both subjective and objective built environment elements affect residents’ travel mode choice behavior, and the subjective and objective built environment attributes have more influence on residents’ daily flexible travel than non-flexible travel, and the perceived built environment elements have more influence on slow travel than other travel modes; Finally, the intersection of subjective perception factors and objective built environment indicators were included in the hybrid choice model to investigate whether there is a moderating effect of subjective perception factors in objective built environment variables on individual travel mode decision behavior. The results show that there is a significant moderating effect of the perception factor in different dimensions of the objective built environment on the daily travel decision behavior of residents, that’s to say,the objective built environment affects the travel behavior by influencing the subjective perception of individuals, and its influence mechanism varies by travel mode. The results of this study deepen the understanding of the interaction between built environment and travel behavior, and provide a fundamental reference for urban transportation planning and management strategies.
