This paper focuses on the treatment of left-turn traffic at intersections,and discusses the design of unconventional intersections on urban roads,which are left-turn vehicles detouring at intersections,the design of continuous flow in trunk road,and double-cycle signal control at the intersection.Based on the consideration of the existing conventional intersections and the limited space of urban road,the vehicle operation and traffic optimized performance of the three kinds of unconventional intersections are analyzed from the road channelization,traffic organization and traffic signal control.And the applicable road conditions and signal control methods of unconventional intersections are discussed in this paper.We take the local intersections with the actual traffic conditions as our research examples from Hefei City,and the unconventional re-design and signal control are carried out.Besides,we simulate the traffic organization and signal timing scheme of unconventional intersections by VISSIM simulation software.The traffic performance and optimization are compared and discussed in the analysis,including travel time,queuing situation,delay and stops of vehicles.Finally,we evaluate the improvement effect of unconventional intersection design and new signal control in actual intersections.The research shows that the three unconventional intersection design and control methods have better operational effects,comparing with the original traditional intersection design and conventional control methods,and reduce the vehicle delay,queue length and stops of intersections.The analysis of three local intersections also indicated that the unconventional intersection design and signal control were based on the original intention making full use of lane space and signal time resources of the existing intersection,and attach importance to the optimization of left-turn traffic organization which effectively improve the utilization of green time and lanes.Thus,the traffic efficiency and capacity of intersections are improved.It has also shown the new thought of helpful solutions for mitigating the traffic congestion problem and provides valuable reference for the application of unconventional intersections in domestic urban road systems.
