In the 21 st century,people's life rhythm is speeding up,leisure time is increasing and experience economy is booming.Tourism has become an important relaxing way for tourists to release the pressure of work and improve the quality of spiritual life.In China,the longterm historical development process has left a variety of forms,distinctive characteristics of many small towns.They have unique space form and style,profound history and culture,simple folk custom,become the popular destination of people's short-term vacation,the proportion of output value of old town tour in tourism is also rising.The planning and design of the public space in old towns and the construction of cultural atmosphere have a direct impact on the tourist experience.This paper studies the planning and design strategies of the public space in old towns from the perspective of tourism experience.We hope to improve the tourist experience of the old town by improving the quality of the public space in the old town.Taking Pingle Old Town,Wufengxi Old Town and Liujiang Old Town in Sichuan Province as examples,this paper makes a field investigation on the public space of the old towns.A questionnaire survey and interview were conducted among 110 tourists at the survey site and 53 tourists who had some planning knowledge but were not present at the survey site.It is found that the main reasons for the poor experience of tourists in old towns are lack of cultural atmosphere,excessive commercialization and so on.In this paper,the satisfaction degree of nine indexes related to public space,public facilities and cultural atmosphere in old towns is evaluated by using SPSS,EXCEL,AHP and other software and mathematical statistics analysis method,fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method and IPA analysis.The analysis results show that the overall satisfaction of tourists to the quality of public space in old towns is not high.On the basis of the comparison and analysis of the IPA scatter diagram,the factors that can be improved in the planning and design of the old town public space are put forward.Based on the above-mentioned research and analysis results,from the perspective of tourists' natural needs,orientation needs,spiritual and cultural needs and tourists' behavior,the street space with high tourists' satisfaction in three old towns is given.This paper analyzes the planning and design of the architectural features,and puts forward some suggestions for improving the planning and design of the public space of the same type of old towns.Aiming at the general or unsatisfactory public space,such as node space,parking lot,toilet,business atmosphere,folk culture and so on,this paper puts forward to perfect the layout and design of the public space of old town and optimize the layout of public facilities.In order to improve the public space quality of the old town and to improve the tourist experience,the cultural atmosphere of the old town is improved and the strategies and measures to improve the quality of the space and the promotion of the strategies and measures are put forward.
