Abstract/Summary:
Due to the fact that urban and rural households,in general,have a different income level,there are "scissor differences" between urban and rural households.Such "scissor differences" shown as the differences in household income and household size,which directly lead to the differences in household space consumption,household mobility choice and travel behavior between the two.At present,increasing number of cities begin to develop integrated land-use transport models(ILUTMs),which can more accurately predict land development,transportation development,travel demand and the interactions among these elements in the future.As for ILUTMs,household production and consumption are essential input data for these models.However,to date,most ILUTMs have not taken the “scissor differences” between urban and rural households into account,which may significantly compromise the accuracy of these models.Based on the household travel survey data from the City of Wuhan carried out in Year 2008,this thesis analyzes whether there are statistically significant differences in terms of the household size(HS),household income(HI),building area(BA)consumed,household mobility choice and travel behavior between urban and rural household groups under different classification schemes.First,the following household classification schemes are proposed:(1)classify the households into merely “urban” and “rural” two groups;(2)six groups based on household attributes of location(urban or rural)and household size(small,medium,and large);(3)six groups based on household attributes of location(urban or rural)and household income(low,medium,and high);and(4)18 groups based on household location,household income and household size.Then statistical tests,such as Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H,are used to check if households within different groups(classified based on above classification schemes)show distinct behaviors in terms of their residential space consumption,mobility choice and travel.Finally,the impact of different urban and rural household classification schemes on the accuracy,complexity and data requirements of the ILUTMs are quantified and presented.Taking the City of Wuhan as the case study area,based on the travel survey data of the City of Wuhan in 2008,this thesis analyzes the differences of HS,HI,space consumption,household mobility choice and travel behavior between urban and rural households classified using the above classification schemes.In addition,several hypothetical ILUTMs for the City of Wuhan based on the PECAS framework,which use different household classification schemes above,are proposed and their design diagrams are presented.Their accuracy in classifying households and corresponding data demand are also studied.It is found that,when compared to the preliminary PECAS household model(where only two types of households considered: rural and urban),the accuracy of the advanced PECAS model with 18 household categories(9 categories for each of urban and rural households classified by HS(3 levels)and HI(3 levels),increases by 62%,but its data requirement increases by 27.35 times.In the case that data required for model development is available,study results show that finer level of urban and rural household classification will improve the accuracy of integrated models and thuse be able to provide more accurate quantitative analyseses to support urban planning and development exercises.On the other hand,the amount of data required for model development will also increase in a geometrical order.
