The automotive cluster is a very important part of the whole vehicle system.The driver can know the conditions of engine and vehicle driving system according to the auto speed,engine speed,fuel level,coolant temperature displayed on the dashboard.Thus ensure the safety and reliability of car driving.Generally speaking,the traditional automobile meters are electromechanical analog clusters,which can only provide drivers with necessary and limited information of the vehicle in operating which is far from meeting the requirements of new technologies and standards of modern automobiles.With the development of science and technology,especially the development of semiconductor industry and microcomputer,automotive electronic instrumentation has become an important feature of modern automotive equipment.In this paper,we provide a detailed introduction on the development process of an electronic combination instrument cluster.After detailed analysis on the input of customer,requirements of mechanical design,hardware design,and software design will be provided.In addition to the necessary functional requirements for instrument cluster,other non-functional requirements such as regulatory,environmental tests,as well as electronic tests are also needed.These nonfunctional requirements should be considered at the beginning of cluster design.The main content will be provided in this paper as follows:(1)Based on the analysis on the preliminary requirements documents and the past experience,some of the requirements are canceled due to cost limitation with the consent of the OEM,meanwhile,the styling of cluster,performance and specific requirements of each module are finally confirmed.(2)Due to the tight development period of instrument cluster,high electromagnetic compatibility requirements,the design of power supply is the most critical part of hardware design of the instrument cluster,switching power supply solutions have to be used to meet the requirement of wide working voltage range and low power consumption of instrument clusters,the step-down power supply chip TPS54262 of Texas Instruments is selected as the main power supply,the boos power supply chip MAX16814 of Maxim is the power supply of LCD backlight.(3)The communication between modern instrument clusters and other parts of automobile is getting closer and closer,CAN bus and LIN bus are used in the most utilities of communication interface,the CAN bus chip TJA1042 of NXP Semiconductors and LIN bus chip TLE7259 of Infineon Semiconductor are used in this design,both digital and analog input circuits utilize the analog interface of the microcontroller with more flexibility.The Texas Instruments LM48100 Q is used in the real voice module to control speaker to give the driver a more directly audible alert.According to the functional requirements of instrument cluster from customers,with the combination of the controlling of hardware circuits and software logic,a vehicle instrument cluster which can meet the requirement of customer and be used in mass production is designed successfully,core technical knowledge and development process have been deeply studied in the design duration,while high profit and value are created for company.
