Research On Assisted-living Pbulic Buildings Of The Chinese Eastern Railway

Since 1898,starting of the Chinese Eastern Railway,administration department of the Chinese Eastern Railway has built various types of buildings one after another.Some of these buildings were built as supporting function which was closely concerning railway staff’s daily life,therefore they will refer as assisted-living public buildings in this paper.These buildings supported railway staff with necessary medical service,education service,recreational activity,and other life demands.Some of them are still in use so far.In the meantime,they are important components of the culture of Chinese Eastern Railway.This paper especially focus on researching the assisted-living public buildings,the approaches are including literature review,field investigation,typology research,and geometry research.There are three main parts of research of assisted-living public buildings:Firstly from macro level point of view,I make analysis of layout of the assistedliving public buildings and further research on the composition of types of functions.Then by organizing the historical development of these buildings,I can summarize the characteristics of distribution of them.There are four main types of buildings: medical buildings,culture buildings,recreation buildings,living supporting buildings.Through the classification and sorting of existing and historical records,the characteristics of site selection and track of construction in different level of sites are further analyzed.The second part,from micro level point of view,the paper turns to research on the organization of space and the characteristic of art of buildings.On the one hand,debate develops from the layout of functional space and organization of transportation space.By comparing the case study and typology analysis,I summarize two types of layout: linear plan and centralize plan.There are also two types of transportation space,including series connection and corridor transportation connection.Then I further research on the transportation space.On the other hand,for the characteristic of art,I apply typology research and geometry research to work on architectural style,design of elevation,and language of decoration in order to make characteristic of art clear.The third part,from interpreting the concept of assisted-living public buildings,I mainly research on three aspects: characteristic of function,sense of place,technique of construction.Firstly,I analyze one by one from three basic characteristics of function including comprehensive,propinquity,general.Secondly,I interpret sense of place from the creating of ecological environment and the interaction between human and environment.Finally,I interpret technique of construction from three aspects which are materials,structure,tectonic technique.In summary,I sort out and classify the layout and characteristic of functions of assisted-living public buildings from macro level point of view.Then I had description and conclusion on the organization of space and characteristic of art of assisted-living public buildings.Finally,I had a debate about the design concept and principles of assisted-living public buildings.The purpose of this paper is trying to present clear description of assisted-living public buildings along The Chinese Eastern Railway in particular period and provide the theoretical frame in order to protect these valuable monuments.
