The Study Of Peter Calthorpe's Sustainable Urban Thought And Its Reference To Chinese Urban Design

Peter Carthorpe is an important theorist on sustainable theory and livability theory.His research is dedicated to solving the most difficult urban problems in urban development in recent decades,and provides an ecologically sustainable,systematic solution and urban development approach for these issues.His theory is always closely linked with practice,and many academic works and rich practical experience are mutually promoted.He is not only a leader in TOD design theory and practice,but also a master in the direction of urban design,urban planning,and public policy.The evolution and development process of the theory is a series of explorations of urban problems in the urban design field after the Second World War.It is clear that the development of the ideological theory of Calthorpe and the accompanying practical explorations are of important theoretical and practical significance for promoting the sustainable development of urban ecology.First of all,this article combs and discriminates the relevant basic theories which have far-reaching influence on Peter Calthorpe's thought.This paper analyzes the origins of garden theory,community neighborhood theory,ecologicalism,and the critical trend of thought that began modernism in the 1960 s and Carl Thorpe's thought.Afterwards,through the combination of Carl Thorpe's personal experience,he analyzed the three main characteristics of his ideological and theoretical evolution,and explored how his theoretical ideas ranged from designing energy-efficient residential buildings to compact,sustainable community design to supporting the community's layout at the regional level.It is clear that the main idea of Carl Thorpe's theory is not the theory of the transport planning level,nor is it just the theory that promotes the development of public transport-oriented development.It is also a comprehensive sustainable urban development concept under regional design.On this basis,this article continues to explore the value characteristics and challenges of Carlthorpe's thought from two perspectives: theory and practice.Secondly,through studying the sustainable urban design strategy of Carl Thorpe,the concept connotation of “Tod Theory” to “Jade City” sustainable city theory is clarified.The principles for the development of ten low-carbon cities,such as urban growth boundary,public transportation-oriented development,mixed use,and small blocks,are summarized from three aspects of the design strategy's objectives,measures,and standards.At the same time,by analyzing the practical results of Karl Thorpe's three levels of community design,regional design and urban renewal,it is clear that its design strategy is based on the development of new cities,the renewal of old cities,and the strategies and mechanisms under different scales.Finally,the article analyzes the practice of its theory in the regionalization of China's urban environment by analysing Calthorpe's newest project design scheme in China,the urban design of Jinan Xindong station area.The urban design of the main urban area of Laoshan is an urban design case in which the author participated in taking Calthorpe's sustainable theory as a guiding ideology,as an exploration and application of its theory in Chinese urban design.
