Urban spatial structure as an open complex adaptive system, its type and development model have a direct impact on the operation of the city in all aspects, including the quality of human settlements.Under the background of globalization, population has formed a large number of world-class,global regional, national, and regional-level cities. While material living standards have been greatly improved, there have been a number of issues such as non-ordered land use, unbalanced development, and non-ecological systems, that need to be solved urgently. This grim situation is particularly evident in complex terrain areas where land resources are tight, ecological patterns are sensitive, and people and land are contradictory.China has a rich landform and the area of such land is huge. The number of cities covered by the above problems is also more extensive. In order to solve the prevalent problems in the complex terrain and promote the healthy circulation of urban systems, this paper proposes to combine "complex terrain" and "spatial structure" for comprehensive analysis, and follow the logic to start research, which is "background and problem-oriented-conceptual combing and theoretical research-method construction-ideas guidance-strategy presentation-practical applications".This paper takes the urban spatial structure under the complex terrain conditions as the research object, through a large number of case studies, analyze the manifestations of urban spatial structure in different types of terrain environment;By adopting a comparative approach, the author chose typical cities and non-plain cities to compare horizontally, use geo science maps and mathematical models to quantitatively study the evolution characteristics of urban spatial structure over time, and reveal spatial structure types and development trends. On this basis,we discuss various dynamic factors affecting the formation and evolution of spatial structures, attempt to propose planning principles and construct specific optimization strategies, and finally conduct a comprehensive demonstration through the case.In a nutshell, this paper takes the “phenomenon description—the law of change—the reason of evolution—the coping strategy” as the context.First of all,the author looks for the specific direction and possibility of the research by combing related theories at home and abroad and summarizing research results in this field. It is found that urban spatial structure research in the context of single terrains such as mountainous areas is more and more remains in the qualitative stage. Therefore, this paper expands the urban background to a comprehensive region of complex terrain, introduces quantitative analysis methods in and attempts to build a more complete research system.Secondly,in order to achieve the purpose of combining the complex terrain with the urban spatial structure, the two components are analyzed separately in order to grasp their intrinsic characteristics. From the perspective of dialectical view, the complexity of the terrain is the objective condition brought about by the spatial structure.Third, focus on the type and evolution characteristics of urban spatial structure under complex terrain conditions from the dual perspectives of regional and temporal. On the one hand,we divide the topographically complex environment into four types of regions and use a large number of analytical data from 71 cities to study the spatial structure. On the other hand,by selecting typical cities and constructing a system of maps,we study longitudinally the evolution of urban spatial structure in different terrain environments, and calculate them through mathematical models such as Boyce-Clark index and dynamic index, and conduct horizontal comparative analysis with plain cities to explore the internal laws and summarize Spatial structure types and analysis of development trends.Fourth, this paper explores the major drivers of spatial structure evolution in this type of special environment, which are specifically summarized as basic, growth, and catalytic intervention factors involving topography, culture, history, technology, social structure and policy planning.Based on the above,we propose problem-oriented planning principles and construct specific optimization strategies, focusing on the combination of geological ecology, land use law and terrain features, traffic system conformation, and three-dimensional space domain. Finally, based on the above theoretical research, the author takes the urban spatial structure of Kaizhou District of Chongqing as a practical case,by the route of " Background conditions-Evolution of spatial structure-Dynamic influence factors-Existing problems-Appeals and principles-Strategy construction",prove that systematic research on urban spatial structure in complex terrain conditions has certain theoretical and practical value.
