Along with the development of economy and societies,the rapid expansion of population and growth of cicties,various social changes have enormously increased.The intimate neighbourhood,traditinal street lane has gradually disappeared,replaced by the monotonous modern commercial space and community which is lack of vitality.On the one hand,characterless and disinteresting commercial space have sprung up,fading its attraction for people's multicultural interactions within the community,added additional cost of goods.On the other hand,because of the lack of attention to users,large scale urban public space is often neglected considering the lack of effectively contact with residents in daily life.Under the background of "big construction",the public space deprived of regional cultural characteristics often become " projects for political carrer ",speeding up the loss of urban memory,the fracture of the urban context and the indifference of interpersonal relationships.The traditional Chinese market has a long history.Accompanied by the development of the city,the market used to play an important role in people's daily living and production.Different from European cities who are focusing on the inheritance and development of marketspace,the "re-development" progress of traditional market space has just started in China.Following with the rational thinking about excessive growth of cities,people are beginning to realise that the calm down on markets and vendors took place concurrntly when cities are ‘cleaned up'for aggressive projects is not an accurate demonstration of modernity and order.In fact,the value of markets is not restricted to the economic aspect,what's more,markets play an integral role in supporting communities,as well as social cohesion and social interactions.This research project explores how urban market works as a social space under the circumstance in mordern society and the specific role they played in facilitating community renewal,reviving interpersonal communication,preserving traditional memory and promoting historical culture.Before literature review,this paper describes the history of the market space,the problems happened in developing modern public space,bringing up the origin,background as well as the main object of the research.Review of literature provides a wider scope to understand the related concept of ‘urban market'and helps to illustrate the economic,social and cultural effects along with the renewal and development of markets.Key elements related to successfull markets,spatial types of markets,behavior psychology and reasonable evaluatin framework for it have been deeply studied in the main part of this paper,following with case studies chosen from both London and Hangzhou to understand the environment character and behavioral habit of users which directly providing guidelines for the design project.Findings from the literature and case studies were been translated into urban design strategies covering several aspects(permeability,accessibility,diversity,mobility,vitality,characteristic,safety and sustainability)and applied to an inner city site in Hefei,China.
