The courtyard house is one of the most widely built and influential types of houses in China,with great significance in both traditional and contemporary architecture.Comparing to the other studies on courtyard houses,this research discussed the adaptability of courtyard houses to sloping fields,focused on the functional,aesthetic,historical,and cultural meaning of this building type.After reviewing the current literature and documentation,the author concluded a series of design strategies for courtyard house on sloping field,based on the consideration of coincidence between architecture and environment.There are five chapters in this dissertation.Chapter One addressed the research backgrounds and objectives.Literature reviews of proceedings,methods,and frameworks from related researches were also summarized in Chapter One.Chapter Two explained the concept,the general layout,and the special importance of courtyard houses.The terminology of “courtyard houses on sloping sites” was defined in Chapter Two as well.The basic components,characteristics,and the challenges in design of courtyard houses on sloping sites were introduced in Chapter Three.Chapter Four discussed the guidelines and significances of sloping-sited courtyard house design considering topographical adaptability.Chapter Five summarized the design theories and methods for courtyard houses on sloping sites.The design of Nanyue Gonghe Nursing Home & Resort was introduced as an example of practical application in Chapter Five.Conclusion is the last part.In summary,this research established a theoretical structure for design of courtyard houses on sloping sites,to analyze and systematize related design cases,which will also provide information for future studies.
