| The usage and development of internal combustion engines have to face both the increasing consumption of fossil oils and the serious environmental pollution. To solve these problems, researchers are seeking renewable alternative fuels for cleaner and more efficient combustion.Ethanol,a promising bio-fuel,was used widely in the internal combustion engines. To save a large consumption of energy and equipment during the anhydrous ethanol production process, glucose which is the hydrolysate of amylum and cellulose is used to prepare the novel emulsion fuel studied in this paper. To evaluate the effects of glucose solution emulsified diesel on performance of the engine, performance and working process of the engine fuelled with this novel emulsified diesel were experimental studied.Based on the previous research of author’s group, emulsified diesel with a 15%glucose solution by mass fraction was used in a diesel engine and compared with pure diesel. The combustion characteristics, performance and emission characteristics of the diesel engine fuelled by a glucose solution emulsified diesel and pure diesel were comparative studied.Without any modifications, the effects of the addition of glucose and water in emulsified ffuel on the combustion and emission characteristics of the diesel engine equipped with a high pressure common rail system were investigated. In addition, performance and emissions of the diesel engine fuelled with this novel emulsified fuel were measured using the 13-mode European Stationary Cycle(ESC).The results showed:that the pesak in-cylinder pressures and peak pressure rise rates of emulsified fuel increased at low and medium load conditions while decreased at high load conditions and the speed of 1500 r/min;that the peak in-cylinder pressures and peak pressure rise rates of emulsified fuel raised with a later relevant crank angle.Increases in peak heat release rates were observed with a later relevant crank angle for E10W fuel at all the operating conditions. In addition, emulsified fuel had longer ignition delay and shorter combustion durations at the various load conditions. At the various tested speed, the brake power of the diesel engine fuelled by emulsified fuel decreased by on average 12.24%.Brake thermal efficiencies with emulsified diesel improved under partial loads at the speed of 2000 rpm.Specifically at the 100%load condition, the brake thermal efficiency was increased by 2.27%.NOx and smoke emissions with emulsified fuel decreased except at individual operating conditions. At the speed of 2000 rpm and five various load conditions,NOx and smoke emissions with emulsified fuel decreased by on average 20.31%and 80.06%,respectively.HC and CO emissions were different for the two fuels under different conditions. It was found from the ESC test that brake thermal efficiencies of emulsified diesel and pure diesel were comparable at 75%and 100%load.Soot emissions decreased significantly while NOx emissions decreased slightly.HC emissions increased while CO emissions decreased at some operating conditions. The results from emission contribution rate of each mode in ESC showed:those modes with high contribution rate of NOx and HC emissions were A100,B75,B100 and C100;and those modes with high contribution rate of CO emission were A25,B25 and C25. |
