In these years, more and more countries are searching new ways to decrease the consumption of petroleum in order to save energy cost because of the great pressure by the shortage of petroleum and the constantly rising price. By detection, the storage of thin oil is only 360 billion ton in the world compared with the 900 billion ton of heavy oil. Heavy oil (including residual oil) is precious and characteristic petroleum resource. It's cleaner than coal when it is fired, and its heat value is higher than coal; it's easier to store, and safer than natural gas; it's cheaper than light oil. So make good use of heavy oil has great future for our country's energy security.Heavy oil has widely used on the large-low speed marine diesel engines. But its high viscosity and poor evaporativity make many problems like burning time longer, burning incomplete, thermal efficiency low and smoke emission high. All these problems restrict its application. But it has the trend to burning heavy oil on large-medium speed diesel engine these years.Emulsified oil can make fuel spray particle finer. So it has the characteristics of decreasing both fuel consumption and exhaust emission. What is more, the worse of the oil quality, the better of the improving result. If emulsified oil technology was combined with the use of heavy oil, it will widen heavy oil's application range probably.This paper is trying to research the feasibility of burning heavy oil on high-speed diesel engine by experiments, whose purpose is to decrease the fuel consumption and reduce the exhaust emission of heavy oil. It is also trying to make three kinds of new heavy oil emulsifier. The emulsifier's effect can be found by the comparison of burning two kind of emulsified heavy oil.The results show that: it can use emulsified heavy oil on high speed diesel engine directly without many modifications; compared with heavy oil, when burning on diesel engine, emulsified heavy oil has both better economy and emission performances; its brake specific fuel consumption has reduced 4%. its NO_X emission has reduced more than 20% and smoke emission has reduced more than 17%, different emulsifiers focus different targets, but their totally effects are similar.
