Study On The Application Of Chu Lacquer Patterns In Wuhan Urban Furniture Design

The modernized city can hardly satisfy people’s pursuit of spiritual lives with the continuously growing economy.Therefore,it becomes rather important to excavate,inherit and carry forward urban regional cultures so as to enhance urban uniqueness and display spiritual outlook.Cities,as a significant part of urban public environment,are functioned of promoting urban regional cultures,displaying urban cultural &spiritual outlook and helping interpersonal communication etc.People are starting to yearn for more efficient,convenient and comfortable urban life with humanistic care in recent years.The views,such as “wisdom city” and “regional culture protection”etc are being greatly concerned by urban residents.Thus,how to improve functions of urban furniture,enhance urban public environments,promote urban regional cultures and stimulate urban public space have become common topics of scholars and designers.Hubei Province is an important birthplace for Chu culture,and Wuhan,as the capital of Hubei Province,bears the responsibility of excavating,inheriting and carrying forward local regional cultures.Chu lacquer,as one of material cultures,is an important part of Chu art cultures,which changed the leading position of bronzes among Chu people and become the most significant objects in the sacrificial rites and lives.Meanwhile,the sacrificial culture,Taoist culture and worship culture promote the development of patterns and shapes of Chu lacquer,which then formed unique aesthetic features of decorative patterns in Chu State with great artistic values and historical significance.Therefore,the researches on artistic characteristics and cultural deposits of Chu lacquer’s patterns as well as the application of Chu lacquer’s patterns into urban furniture design can not only help excavate,inherit and carry forward regional cultures in Hubei,but enrich artistic styles of furniture in Wuhan,improve urban dwellers’ sense of belonging and show urban charm etc.This thesis explored the furniture design techniques of Wuhan under the perspective of regional culture protection based on the application of Chu lacquer’s patterns into urban furniture design.First of all,the current situation of urban furniture in Wuhan as well as the artistic characteristics,values and spiritual connotations of Chu lacquer’s patterns was analyzed.Then,the design principle,application strategy and design element application method of Chu lacquer’s patterns in urban furniture of Wuhan were concluded to provide theoretical thoughts for design practices.Further,this thesis took the urban furniture design in the East Lake Scenic Spot of Wuhan as an example to put forward the design concept of Chu lacquer’s patterns in the urban furniture design,and then conducted the conceptual design by combining proposed theories so as to design urban furniture products with Chu cultural characteristics and modern urban demands.
