A Study Of The Ecological Marxism Of Ben Agger From The Perspective Of Consumption Alienation

As the forerunner and founder of ecological Marxism,Ben Agger creatively proposed the idea of ecological Marxism in his book “Introduction to Western Marxism” and combined it with the reality of the development of capitalist society.The theory created a new ecological horizon for Marxism and also provided a new perspective for the critique of capitalist society.Ben Agger deeply explored the consumption alienation phenomenon in the capitalist society,creatively endows the consumption behavior with political implication,and points out that the alienation of consumer behavior has led to ecological degradation and eventually triggered ecological crisis,which will replace the traditional economic crisis as a new capitalist crisis.To address this crisis,Ben Agger put forward various ideas for constructing ecological socialism.From the perspective of consumption alienation,this dissertation will analyze the logic of ecological Marxism—the ecological crisis triggered by consumption alienation eventually leads to social reform,aiming to establish ecological socialism by overcoming consumption alienation under the dialectics that the expectation have shattered.Based on the theoretical framework of eco-socialism,Ben Ager looks forward to completing the construction of eco-socialism through the steady economic model,the non-bureaucratic management model,and the decentralized technology model.There are also some theoretically limitations in ecological Marxism.It has exaggerated the harm of the ecological crisis and overemphasized the impact of consumption,revealing a strong idealistic color in many theories.However,we must admit that the Ben Agger's ecological Marxism provides a more distinct research direction for many subsequent ecological Marxists.It is a true reflection of the development of contemporary capitalist society,insisting on the organic unification of theory and practice.Therefore,through the ideas related to consumption alienation,we can more clearly sort out the system of Ben Agger's ecological Marxism,aiming to absorb the essence of his theory and provide an important theoretical reference for the construction of socialist ecological civilization in China.
