Preparation And Characterization Of High Barrier Coatings By Polyvinyl Alcohol And Laminated Nanoparticles

Abstract/Summary:
In this work,three types of nanocomposite coatings of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and laminated nanoparticles were prepared through mechanically stirring and ultrasonic process with PVA as matrix,montmorillonite(MMT)modified by KH560,a-zirconium phosphate(a-ZrP)exfoliated by propylamine and graphene oxide(GO)modified by KH560 as filling nanoparticles respectively.The nanocomposite coatings with high barrier and mechanical properties were fabricated by dipcoating and thermal curing the prepared coatings on the surface of the PET film.The PVA/MMT-KH560 nanocomposite coatings were prepared by blending MMT modified with KH560 and PVA solution by mechanically stirring and ultrasonic process.PET-PVA/MMT-KH560 films were formed by dipcoating and thermal curing PVA/MMT-KH560 nanocomposite coatings on the PET surface.The performance and properties of PVA/MMT-KH560 nanocomposite coatings were tested by FTIR,XRD,TGA,DSC,UV-vis,SEM,tensile and barrier testing.The results show that the prepared nanocomposite coatings have good barrier,transmittance and mechanical properties with oxygen transmission rate of 0.005 cm3/(m2·24h),water vapor transmission rate of 4.94 cm3/(m2·24h),transmittance of 75%and tensile modulus of 1335.2 MPa when the mass ratio of KH560 to MMT,mass ratio of PVA to MMT-KH560 and the concentration of PVA/MMT-KH560 are1/10,1/1 and 1.5 wt%respectively.The PVA/a-ZrP nanocomposite coatings were prepared by blending a-ZrP exfoliated by propylamine with PVA solution by mechanically stirring and ultrasonic process.PET-PVA/α-ZrP films were fabricated by dipcoating and thermal curing PVA/a-ZrP nanocomposite coatings on the surface of PET.FTIR,XRD,TGA,DSC,UV-vis,SEM,TEM,tensile and barrier testing were employed to characterize the PVA/a-ZrP nanocomposite coatings.The results show that the prepared PVA/a-ZrP nanocomposite coatings have good barrier,transmittance and mechanical properties with oxygen transmission rate of 1.09 cm3/(m2·24h)and water vapor transmission rate of 2.96 cm3/m2·24h,transparency of above 80%and tensile modulus of 1639.0 MPa when the mass ratio of a-ZrPexfoliated by propylamine to PVA is 1.5/1,concentration of PVA/a-ZrP coating is 1.0 wt%.The PVA/MGO nanocomposite coatings were prepared by blending GO modified with KH560 with PVA solution by mechanically stirring and ultrasonic process.PET-PVA/MGO films were fabricated by dipcoating and thermal curing,the PVA/MGO nanocomposite coatings on the PET surface.FTIR,XRD,TGA,DSC,UV-vis,SEM,TEM,tensile and barrier testing were employed to characterize the PVA/MGO nanocomposite coatings.The results show that the prepared nanocomposite coatings have good barrier,transmittance and mechanical properties with oxygen transmission rate of 0.56 cm3/(m2 24h),water vapor transmission rate of 2.95 cm3/(m2·24h),transmittance of 60%and tensile modulus of 5930.7 MPa when the mass ratio of PVA to MGO and the concentration of PVA/MGO are 25/1 and 2.0 wt%respectively.The PVA/MMT-KH560,PVA/α-ZrP and PVA/MGO composites prepared in this paper have benign-mechanical and barrier properties,the three films are expected to be applied in food packaging field.
