The Re-creation Of Traditions In The Context Of Globalization: Practices Of Zen-style Costumes

During the period of social transition,this research tried to find out the reflection of social transformation on the cultural level by focusing on the transformation of the individual's daily life.Taking the recreation of traditional costumes as the entry point,Xiamen is the main field site in this research.In this study,field survey and in-depth interview were used.The researcher took part in over one hundred sessions of the Buddhism believers' rallies and bun fights.The researcher even worked along with the workers to produce the traditional costumes,played a role as a saleswoman to sell traditional costumes.There are about fifty people accepted the interview.Through the perspective of reflectional modernity,this research tried to give a complete picture of traditional costumes reconstruction in the context of globalization.And on this basis,thick description was used on those who practiced their new philosophy of life by wearing the new traditional costumes.Then the influence of Buddhism could be unfolded before our eyes.Based on the business accumulative effect in Xiamen,the researcher divided the recreation of traditional costumes into three partitions:take the Nanputuo temple as the centre,buddhist monks and buddhist practitioners whose costumes would be the first kind;then Hexiangxi-Hubinbei Road where live the emerging middle class,whose costumes called the new traditional costumes could be the second kind;Zhongshan Road,the public who consumed diablement fort made costumes were considered as the third kind.And then the researcher tried to observe the three types of costumes from its design,production to sales,analyze its present development situation,thus learn the power of traditional costumes reconstruction in the context of globalization.And by focusing on the wearers' individual clothing practice,the researcher would explore the wearers' impetus to reconstruct subjectivity.Finally,the research tried to drop this phenomenon on a global scale,in the thinking of the relationship between the globalization and localization,the meaning of individual traditional costumes reconstruction can be seen.
