In recent years,with the rapid development of human society,there was a shortage of petroleum resources.Indonesian oil sands has been used to research,and pilot plant test has been carried out.The oil content of the oil sands resource is 10wt%-40wt%,the oil sands belong to bonanza.A model?symmetric heating model of one dimensional large flat wall?has been used to simulate the distillation furnace,and work out the heating curves with the different thickness of bed layer and the different oil content.The heat capacity of asphalt is much larger than that of sand,so,a higher oil content bring a quicker heating rate and a lower processing cost;but the lack of oil sands flowability cause the different heating rate for individual bed positions.And the suitable experiment condition of the pilot plant test has been worked out too,for example,semi coke decomposition rate,the lowest oil content and the highest water content which the oil sands should scratch.Therefor,oil sands'industry should meet the equilibrium point of those properties.One example of the heat balance points is that the content of water is 3.7wt%while semi coke decomposition rate is 5wt%,and the content of oil is10%.In this paper,experiments have been carried out on oil sands with different pyrolysis methods.Experimental results show that the fixed bed heating furnace for pyrolysis could make a better yield of pyrolytic oil and a better product quality.But a higher water content would cause a longer central heating time,when the water content is 10wt%,even the heating length from room temperature to 100?is 8 h.So,the drying process should be done before pyrolysis process by the high temperature flue gas to remove the free water,and the water content should been controlled below 0.9%in the Indonesian oil sands.A analysis has been done to the pyrolytic oil,such as,the percent of light oil is 57.44wt%,the heavy oil is 38.79wt%,the residual oil is3.77wt%,and the sulphur content is 51.8 mg·g-1,this means a feasibility of industrialization and a necessity of desulfurize.The characterization of semi coke and pyrolytic gas also be done too.For example,the solid product can be made into oil sands ash when it burnt at a high temperature,and Ca content in oil sands ash is above 80wt%.Because it contain lot of CaO,the ash could be made into composite cement.The oil sands ash also have a fine particle size,between about 10-50?m,which meet the demand of the particle size of composite cement.Even more gratifying is that the ash also could be used in steel making industry with its'appreciable Fe content.
