Research On The Application Of "Zero Waste" In Fashion Design

Wasting is a serious problem in current fashion industry,which directly threatens and affects human survival environment.Therefore,it is an urgent task for clothing industry to transfer to a green sustainable development model and realize sustainable fashion system as soon as possible.Thus,it is necessity to develop "zero waste" clothing design to respond to the low-carbon environmental protection concept.The broadly defined "zero waste" fashion design mainly consists of three parts,that is,upgrading reengineering,reconstructing and "zero waste" pattern design.The main research in this paper is about the narrowly defined "zero waste",which is to explore the pattern design of “zero waste”.The application of "zero waste" in clothing design is the key point of this study.Social history research method was used in this paper by backtracking historical costumes from ancient Eastern and Western costumes.It was found that the ancient clothing was transited from original“a piece of cloth” to “plain geometry” clothing,and then clothing design based on human body.Due to the limitation of weaving levels at that time,these clothing were designed to save fabric,which is quite similar to the idea of modern "zero waste" fashion design.It can be said that the ancient saving design is the prototype of modern "zero waste" clothing.Nowadays,we can draw inspiration from the ancient design into the modern "zero waste" design.Nowadays,there has begun to emerge many excellent designers with the "zero waste" clothing design ideas in the world of fashion industry.By using case study method,the representative "zero waste" fashion design works were analyzed,and the methods of "zero waste" design were concluded as well to provide new ideas and inspirations for the future "zero waste" design.Based on exploration of the historical and modern "zero waste" design works,the design practice of "zero waste" was conducted in the paper.By experimental research,it was found that geometric cutting method in the existing "zero waste" design is mainly based on the plane pattern design,that is,to complete the clothing structure design in a two-dimensional space,which greatly limited the style of clothing.So this paper developed a new "zero waste" geometric pattern design method by integrating the costume plane-structuring and solid-structuring.The innovative method included two parts,one is based on the half-completed plane geometry model,and the other is based on the half-completed stereoscopic geometric model.Finally the "zero waste" design work is completed by draping.Through the experimental research,it was notdifficult to find the semi-completed pattern design method can not only effectively stimulate the creativity and break up the mindset of designers,but also promote the possibility of innovative "zero waste" fashion design.
