A Study On Joel Kovel's Ecological Marxism Thought

With the spread of modern industrial civilization on a global scale,the issue of global ecological environment problems has become increasingly exposed and warning lights are illuminated for the future of mankind.In this context,the western developed capitalist countries took the lead in the emergence of the ecological environmental protection movement and the theoretical attention of scholars.Since the 90 s of the 20 th century,the ecological environment problems of the socialist countries has been disclosed,further arousing the concern and reflection of many scholars.These histories all provide the foundation for Joel Kovel's thought,the contemporary American ecological Marxism.In the face of the global ecological environment problems that spreads across the world,it is urgent to answer the challenges posed by the times in both theory and practice.This requires that we return to the text of the thinker,return to the historical context and return to the Marxist philosophical thought so as to discuss the origin of the ecological environment problems and countermeasures.This paper has three parts.The first part is the formation background of Joel Kovel's ecological Marxism thought.It can be seen that the emergence of contemporary capitalist social ecological environment problems,the exposure of ecological environment problems under the traditional socialist mode and the rise of green movement have become the realistic background of Joel Kovel's ecological Marxism thought.At the same time,Joel Kovel's ecological Marxism has a deep theoretical source.Specifically,Marxism,natural philosophy,ecological feminism and Ontology have great enlightenment on his thought,and these ideas more or less integrated into his views of ecological Marxism,which become an integral part of his thought.The second part concretely elaborates the rich content of Joel Kovel's ecological Marxism thought,which mainly includes the following aspects:ecologically criticizing capital and capitalism from threeangles:ecological crisis and social crisis,the anti-ecological nature of capital,and the malignant growth of capitalism;From the critique of green economy,the critique of ecological philosophy and the critique of democratism,populism and fascism constitute the critique of the ecological politics.On this basis,Joel Kovel formed the ecological political concept of ecologic socialism.He expounds the history and reality of ecological socialism,the principles to be followed and the ways of building ecological socialism.The third part evaluates Joel Kovel's ecological Marxism.The positive significance of the thought lies in revealing the root causes of the ecological environment problems of capitalism,and reflecting on the ecological environment problems caused by traditional socialism.The limitation of Joel Kovel's ecological Marxism lies in its failure to persist in its historical materialism.The concept of ecological socialism is utopian,and the current reality is hard to put into practice.Studying Joel Kovel's ecological Marxist thought has many enlightenments for the development of contemporary China.It suggests that China should control capital to reduce the damage to the ecological environment problems,realize ecologicalization in the mode of production,and guide the ecologicalization of consumption patterns,and further strengthen the construction of ecological civilization system,which is conducive to China to overcome the ecological and environmental problems,building a socialist ecological civilization and a beautiful China.
