Plato once said that, mathematics is the highest form of all knowledge. All people have to admit that mathematics has opened the door wide to human wisdom in a large part.It is both a tool of knowledge and a source of knowledge itself.Mathematics has always played an important role in many disciplines. In addition to the well-known natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, astronomy and so on,it also has an irreplaceable position in social sciences such as economics, history and so on.However, due to the differences in their respective attributes between mathematics and law, there is not much connection between them, and legal scholars have relatively little research on this. This article attempts to observe and analyze the mathematical phenomena in the process of legal development in the three aspects of legislation, law abiding and judicature. It involves two dimensions of China and the West. The aim is to do some research about the relationship between mathematics and law.On the one hand, mathematics and law between to different subject areas respectively, each of which has quite different disciplinary attribute;on the other hand, the characteristics of mathematics, such as high certainty, objectivity and logic, are also the value which law pursues.Whether to construct or even solve legal problem by mathematical concepts, thinking and methods,or to find and discover mathematical phenomena in the context of law, politics and even the entire society,is helpful to the development of law and the realization of legal functions. However, from the perspective of personnel training and education, most law scholars always stay away from mathematics. Also, the interest and understanding of law of the scholars in mathematical field are relatively shallow. Most of the existing research materials about the two are also created by the scholars with a comprehensive knowledge background.Holistically, there is insufficient attention and communication between mathematics and law. This article attempts to analyze and summarize previous research materials and combine practical cases to attract morescholars from different disciplines and even ordinary people to the law and mathematics.Hopefully the emergence of more comprehensive research in this era is helpful to build a country and a society under the rule of law.
