Southern Anhui,a mountainous and hilly area,is south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It is located between 29°31?-31°00? N and 116°31?-119°45? E,which belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate zone. This area, one of the five vegetation areas in Anhui Province,is rich in plant and animal resources.Liverworts and hornworts are also an important part of the biodiversity of the region. However,it is often be ignored because of the small size of this plant group. So far, only a few related flora studies in this area have been carried on.In this research, many field investigations and specimen collection of liverworts and hornworts were carried on in the main mountains and surrounding areas in Southern Anhui.Based on the species diversity data of liverworts and hornworts in Southern Anhui, the floristic composition and geographical distribution characteristics were analyzed. The main research results are as follows:1.According to the collection of liverworts and hornworts in Southern Anhui,a total of 953 specimens were obtained.Based on the identification of the specimens and the collation of the published literatures, there were 213 species of liverworts and hornworts in this region, belonging to 38 families,64 genera.According to statistics, there were 7 dominant families(number of species ?10),accounting for 18.42% of the total number of families.Lejeuneaceae is the biggest family, including 46 species in 12 genera and accounting for 18.75% and 21.60% of the total number of genera and species, respectively. There were 11 dominant genera(number of species >5),accounting for 17.19% of the total genus. At the same time,31 genera have only one species, accounting for 48.44% of the total number of genera, reflecting the diversity and complexity of liverworts and hornworts in Southern Anhui.2.Twenty-one new record species, five new record gunera and three new record families were found in Anhui province. We also found three endangered species in China: Hattoria yakushimensis,Nowellia aciliata and Xenochila integrifolia. In addition,we have sorted out five species endemic to China.3.Ten epiphyllous liverworts were recorded in Anhui, which belonging to 2 families,5 genera.Comparing the number of epiphyllous liverworts to that of 30 years ago,we found that the number of epiphyllous liverworts in Southern Anhui has decreased and species diversity has decreased, too. It is presumed that the impact of human activities may lead to environmental degradation, causing the suitable habitat of epiphyllous liverworts loss.4.The flora of liverworts and hornworts in southern are complex and diverse, which can be divided into 13 geographical constituents.Among them, east Asia is the most abundant with the highest proportion of 34.01%.Temperate and tropical components account for 31.98% and 31.47% respectively in the flora, showing the characteristics of east Asian components, temperate and tropical intersections.5.A comparison of genera and species similarity among Southern Anhui and the adjacent six areas, the result shows that the highest similarities with Southern Anhui are the Daiyun Mt.and Wuyi Mt.,and the second Maoer Mt.and Tianmu Mt.However, the relationships of Qizimei Mt.and the Qinling Mt.with Southern Anhui are far.In summary, the diversity of the liverworts and hornworts in Southern Anhui is relatively rich, showing obvious East Asian characteristics, while temperate and tropical components also account for a large proportion.Based on the data, the three components almost equal. What's more, the endemic species and endangered species in China account for a large proportion, which fully shows that the flora of the area is complex and diverse. However, due to the high proportion of new recorded species in Anhui province, the previous investigation of bryophytes in this area has been insufficient. In the later period, more efforts are needed to conduct a more comprehensive and in-depth bryophyte background survey in the south of Anhui and even the whole Anhui province.
