Xue Fengzuo was a famous historian in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. He played an important role in introducing western science.Xue fengzuo is recognized in the academic circles as the first scholar to introduce the logarithmic and advanced tycho universe system. It can be seen from Xue fengzuo’s works that his pragmatic and western learning concepts are still useful for reference today.Xue fengzuo is enough to be called a pearl of science,in order to make it emit due brilliance,it is necessary to dig into the scientific spirit of Xue fengzuo temperament, continue to strengthen the study of Xue fengzuo,to fill the gap in the study of Xue fengzuo. The fierce collision between Chinese and western cultures in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty led to earthshaking changes in all aspects of the society and the ideas of literati.Xue fengzuo was no exception.Through the genetic investigation of Xue fengzuo’s scientific spirit temperament, this paper further discusses whether Xue fengzuo has the scientific spirit temperament in Merton’s theory, and whether the unique scientific spirit temperament of Xue fengzuo can be studied from the perspective of scientists themselves. If so,how is it reflected in his thoughts and works? By comparing the scientific spirit and temperament of Xue fengzuo,Mei wending,Wang xichan and Kepler, the influence of their scientific spirit and temperament on their respective scientific careers was analyzed. These aspects have hardly been covered in the previous studies on Xue fengzuo,so in this case, focusing on the weak links can make the research scope wider and more favorable for a comprehensive understanding of Xue’s scientific achievements.Based on this, the reaction of Chinese traditional culture after encountering heterogeneous culture in that period is also a problem worthy of attention. The tentative answers to these questions can provide enlightenment for China to cultivate scientific spirit under the current globalization situation. This paper is divided into four parts to discuss the scientific spirit temperament of Xue fengzuo:The first part, mainly to Xue fengzuo’s scientific spirit temperament genetic investigation.Against the background of the eastward movement of western learning,Xu guangqi’s scientificview had an important influence on Xue fengzuo. At that time Xue family can be said to be a famous family, but did not pay too much attention to fame,Xue fengzuo by the family atmosphere of invisible edification. The unique experience of not being an official all his life enabled him to concentrate on academic studies and provided him with a relatively free condition for several academic turns in the future. From the division of Lu shanji,Sun qifeng to the division from Wei wenkui, and then to go to the moon pavilion, the rich experience of the open field of vision of Xue fengzuo. It is one of the important characteristics of Xue fengzuo’s scientific thought to pay attention to practical learning and maintain that learning to practice is one of the important characteristics of Xue fengzuo’s scientific thought.During this period,Chinese and western science began to communicate, especially the western modern science came to China and had a great influence. The second part mainly analyzes the basic content of Xue fengzuo’s scientific spirit temperament. From the perspective of sociology of science,Xue fengzuo had the universalism of "no difference in every corner of the sky",the communalism of "no one gets the public tools of the road",the unselfish doctrine of "save the pains of previous philosophers for the discussion of later generations" and the organized skepticism of "cause and change" in the Merton norm. From the aspect of the quality that scientists should have,Xue fengzuo has the spirit of compatibility and inclusion of "materials that harmonize all parties and conform to the model of our study",the spirit of daring to break through the traditional bondage of "not for empty talk to dazzle people’s eyes and ears",and the attitude of respecting the facts "after the actual observation".The third part compares the scientific spirit and temperament of Xue fengzuo,Mei wending,Wang xichan and Kepler, and then analyzes the uniqueness of Xue fengzuo’s scientific spirit and temperament.Mei wending was known as the "first man of mathematics" in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, together with Wang xichan,he was called "er ’an".After reading Mei wending’s works,Kang xi gave him a high evaluation.Wang xichan’s life oath not to be clear, there is a clear Ming dynasty legacy complex.Wang xichan was always on the mind of the destruction of the old country, could not accept the reality of the destruction, hated the new rulers,so in such amood,Wang xichan’s scientific activities had a great impact, many of his behavior can be explained. In a sense,Mei wending and Wang xichan are like two extremes, and Xue fengzuo is the compromise point of the two people, although the life is not an official but there is no so obvious anti-Qing mood, this Xue fengzuo can adapt to the social environment, both can seize some opportunities and can concentrate on academic study. The scientific spirit temperament Shared by Kepler and Xue fengzuo is methodical skepticism, and Kepler’s attitude of excellence towards science is what Xue fengzuo needs to learn. The fourth part analyzes the value and influence of Xue fengzuo’s scientific spirit temperament. How to make an objective evaluation of Xue fengzuo is a problem that the academic circles pay more attention to in recent years. It is necessary to affirm Xue’s scientific contribution and status, and to find out the reasons why Xue’s research is neglected. This paper further discusses the serious challenge to the Merton criterion in the era of great science and analyzes the realistic rationality and the way out of its existence.
