Mobile maps have been widely used in traffic management,logistics,navigation,and operational command,providing rich geographic information for people to produce and live.However,as a tool for transmitting information by maps,the symbol design of mobile navigation maps currently faces many problems,which has a certain degree of influence on the usability of map symbols.At present,cognitive research on mobile map symbols has become an inevitable requirement.Eye movement research is considered to be the most effective means of visual information processing research.With its natural advantages,Eye movement is gradually becoming a hot spot in design research.Based on the theoretical study of semiotics and map symbol analysis,this study divides map symbols into icon,index and symbol.Then use eye movement experiment to explore the influence mechanism of three types of symbols on map reading,and record the difference in color and the effect of gender differences on the effect of the test.The research mainly uses the visual search experimental paradigm and selects the validity and efficiency of the completed task as the experimental dependent variable.The results show that:(1)In the mobile navigation map symbol search task,the symbol is the least effective,significantly lower than the index.(2)In the mobile navigation map symbol search task,the search efficiency of the index is the highest,which is significantly higher than the icon and the symbol.(3)In the mobile navigation map symbol search task,there is no significant difference between the three map symbols in the perception stage;in the early recognition process,the participants' perception of symbolic symbols requires less visual attention resource allocation,which is significantly lower than Image symbols;the difference in symbol search efficiency described above exists only in the relatively late processing,that is,in the stage of symbol decision making.(4)In the mobile navigation map symbol search task,the male searcher's search efficiency for the symbol is significantly higher than that of female subjects;male subjects' search efficiency for index is significantly higher than icon,and female subjects' search for index is significantly higher than the symbol.As an important means of map information transmission,this paper uses the eye movement experiment method to explore the semantic features of map symbol elements,which has important theoretical and practical significance for the design of map symbols.Eye movement research is considered to be the most effective means in visual information processing research.The eye movement evaluation of map symbol information transmission efficiency and map symbol design effect enriches the research of cartography cognition,which is a powerful complement to the theoretical depth of existing research.In addition,based on the above related research,the design strategy of mobile navigation map symbols is proposed: prominent feature elements,adapted context elements and symbol differentiation.The research results can provide the basis for the symbol design of mobile navigation maps,and on this basis,the design practice of map symbols and mobile map applications is completed.
